Old St. Thomas, Ashton in Makerfield Recds
« on: Friday 24 June 11 05:57 BST (UK) »
Hello, I have an ancestor Thomas Davies(davis, daviss) who was born abt 1686 in Ashton in Mak. (Winwick). Are old church records available for that time period? Seem to start in 1696. Tried family search, and online parish recds. and ancestry.com. I think his father was also Thomas. Thanks, Debbie

Hi, Wigan History Shop hold the following microfiche.  You can google for more information and they are extremely helpful.

Ashton-In-Makerfield St Thomas C.E.
Baptism:1698-1938
Marriages:1700-1753 1845-1955
Burials:1745-1805 1806-1844 1845-1974

(The missing marriages between 1753 and 1845 took place at St. Oswald's Winwick.)

Hope this is helpful.  R.

Hello.

There were no baptisms at St. Thomas' before 1698.  There is an excellent history of the parish if you google the church website.

Hopefully, the information you require will be in the St. Oswald's registers.  R.

Hello,

The registers from St. Oswalds Winwick - dating from the mid 1700's, are online on the following site:

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Winwick/index.html

You really need to google the history of St. Thomas Ashton to see how parish boundaries and suchlike have been altered over the years in that area.  Hopefully, you will be able to trace a pattern for your family.

The list of Winwick records I gave are transcripts by the Lancvashire Parish register Society. Many reference libraries have these books. Some can also be bought as CD.

Lancashire Record Offcie has copies of Winwick registers on film as well as the transcriptions but they are closed from 4 July to October

The original registers are at Cheshire Record Office so they probably have them on film
