Looking for Herbert Usher
« on: Sunday 26 June 11 06:21 BST (UK) »

In Jun 1924 Herbert Usher married Fanny Barraclough (nee Sowden b 1869 Bramley) at Manchester Cathedral Manchester   CATH/218/23.

As this was her second marriage, and at age 55, it's quite possible Herbert had been married before, also.

I have details of Fanny, but would appreciate help in finding birth, death and anything else re Herbert.

Hi John B

Fanny's 1935 probate entry shows that Herbert (who was one of her executors) was a decorator.

The most likely candidate for Herbert was born in Manchester abt 1883 (birth registered May qtr 1883, son of a painter/decorator called Joseph Ghent Usher) and may have died in the Oldham area in 1946.  However it's not possible to be sure this is your man with the little information you've given.  There's no obvious sign of an earlier marriage for Herbert (locally at least), but his marriage certificate ought to give his previous marital status as well as his father's name and occupation.

Hello Warncoort and thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, there are many Herbert Ushers, and without any second name, or idea as to his age, it has not been possible to isolate any person from those listed.

Hi Anna,
Thanks for your reply. I hadn't found Fanny's probate, so that is something new.
Yes, based on that, the son of a painter/decorator would seem likely, however he would have been aged 41 marrying a 55yr old widow. Not impossible, but surely a little unusual.

I was hoping that someone might have access to Manchester Cathedral records to show more details from their marriage.

Hi Amanda,

Many Thanks for all your good work and suggestions.

I feel the only way we can make any progress on this with any certainty is to check the church records, or buy Marriage Cert (which I was hoping to avoid).

Can anyone advise if it is possible to check the church register?

lancashirebmd.org.uk show the following

Hi John,
Maybe I can fill in a bit more, the Ushers are my mothers side of the family. James Lawson Usher and Joseph Ghent Usher brothers, both had sons named Herbert and born in 1883.  The Joseph Ghent's son married Fanny Barraclough 19th April 1924, she was a widow, fathers name on certificate shown as Amos Sowden deceased (1907), occupation an furnaceman, Herbert is shown as a Bachelor so no previous marraiage.  Fanny was born in Farnley, Yorkshire where she married Jonas Barraclough on the 6th April 1889. Still researching my family tree so gaps still to be filled.

Hi
Welcome to rootschat!

Does the marriage certificate give Herbert's occupation?
