OPRs Cupar 1681
« on: Tuesday 28 June 11 13:37 BST (UK) »
Hello Team

Can anyone tell me please...am I likely to get more information from an OPR via Scotland's People, or ordering in a film via LDS...than is already on an IGI record?

For example...father's name, if it's not on the IGI marriage record?

I am interested in trying to confirm the parents of Walter Bowman and Christian Robertson, who married in Cupar 4 Nov 1681
(variously, Walter Bouman and Christiane Robertson)

Veronika

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but as the LDS filmed the Parish Records I would expect that to be the same as the OPR on SP.

I'm not sure about such early records, but some OPR's can give additional information that isn't on the IGI (such as father's occupation, child's dob, mmn)  - but if a father is not named on the IGI I would suspect illegitimacy. Is the mother named? Perhaps the OPR image  may name the reputed father or give additional information that may not have been included on the IGI record. On the flip side, some OPR's give little or no additional information.  :-\

With the low cost of obtaining an OPR from SP, I would think that would be easier and cheaper than ordering a film from the LDS?  :-\

Thank you kindly, Ruskie

I could be wrong, but I am of the opinion that IGI rarely, if ever, gives the fathers' names
That it is only Ancestral and Pedigree which do

Maybe it might be better if I revise my question...

Do 1681 OPRs ever show fathers' names?

I've not got as far back as 1681 with any of my research lines, so I can't answer your question - I take it you are specifically referring to marriages? (In your original question I thought you were asking about marriages and OPRs in general giving the father's name - sorry I misunderstood).

You say that Walter and Christian married in Cupar in 1681.
I have no idea if this is the same Walter, but there is this extracted baptism record on the IGI which no doubt you've seen:

IGI Individual Record

WALTER BOWMAN
Christening:  27 DEC 1657
Cupar, Fife
Father:  JON. BOWMAN
Mother:  BEATRIX TODD

Are you trying to tie this baptism in with the marriage to Christian to see if the father is the same?

I suppose the only way to see what information is on the OPR's is to purchase it via SP.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  :-\

Hi Veronika,

I think scotlandspeople is probably the best.

All my ancestors are from Fife in Scotland, and I have many images from the OPR and most show the  names of both parents and some even show occupation.
I have quite a few from the early 1600s, and all show fathers name.

Kilconquhar, Newburn, Ceres, Balmerino, Baldinnie colinsburgh in Fife also Edinburgh, and Stirling.
Families.... Ramsay, Black, Hunter, Lessels, Russell, Smart, Wishart.

Let me see now...

7 tries...zero parents. Good for SP's bottom line, I guess
