Tyrcanol, Morriston, Swansea COMPLETE THANKS
« on: Saturday 30 April 05 12:09 BST (UK) »
I've just found out my paternal great grandparents Thomas William Richards and Sara Lawson, were residing in "Tyrcanol" Morriston, Swansea when they got married in 1912.

I've found Morriston on Autoroute, but not Tyrcanol. Is this likely to be a village name near there or a part of Swansea or a house/farm name. Havent a clue when it comes to Welsh names!  :)

Thomas was a tram driver, his father David Richards an Engine Driver and Sara's father, John Lawson, was a Foreman. I've tried to look for the families on the 1901 census but had no luck so far, so if anyones eyes are working better than mine, I'd be grateful for any assistance  :)

Thanks,
Catherine

Catherine, Hi

Now spelt "Tircanol" it is a Hamlet/Village a spit north east of Morriston see

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Parishes.html

and then Llangyfelach for more info of the area.

As far as the family are concerned do you have any idea of dates of birth for Thomas or Sara?

Hi Wendi,

Thanks for the info on Tircanol/Tyrcanol. Found the Richards family on1871/81/91 and 1901 census, but still having problems with Sara Lawson. On her marriage cert. it says age 21 which would put her dob c.1891

Still looking......

Just thinking out loud  :- Do you have the wedding cert?, just wondered if any family members witnessed the union.......the only contender for Sara I can see on the 1901 Census would be a Sarah Leyshon born Qtr to Sept 1891.  The Census show father as John Leyshon, and well, with a Welsh accent Lawson/Leyshon  ???  and they were living kinda near Swansea in Llansamlet, this John was a Coal Hewer, but I guess he could have been promoted  ???  but it's all nothing without some little clue to cement it all together

No help at all really !!!!! ;D

Having real problems trying to find Sara/h!!

Witnesses on her marriage certificate were a Fred Lawson and an Ida Lawson. I was assuming that Sara/h also came from Swansea, but my dads just said he's not sure!!

Sara/h and Thomas had a son, John Richards in 1921 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, where Thomas had come to be a labourer on the steelworks. I cant see them returning from Lincolnshire to have the wedding in Swansea though, can you? especially when two of her family members were witnesses. So I was thinking that maybe they did both come from the Swansea area and then left together after the marriage to look for work at the steelworks in Scunthorpe. (The 1911 census would be real handy now!!)

Yup, your right the 1911 Census, would be SO much help to all of us  ;D I agree with you that they probably married before they moved.  I can't see a Lincolnshire Lass travelling to Swansea to get married.  Fred & Ida are probably Auntie & Uncle so that's not helpful either! and their names don't appear at first glance on the 1901 census either.  Shall we talk again in 6 years time when the 1911 Census is out ?

Best wishes
Wendi

This 100 year rule is no good to someone as impatient as me!!  :D  Think I could be spending a fortune searching for births of Sara/h Lawson around 1891 with father John, wasted birth certificates, etc.... Good job I've got a few credits left for 1837online.....If I dont have any luck you'll probably find me sobbing on here for help again ;)

Thanks again,
Catherine

Had no luck on 1827online searching for Sara/h Lawson. There were a few born 1890-2 but none in the Swansea area that I could see. Is the best option to ask the GRO to do a search for those 3 years for a Sara/h Lawson, father John? (and hope there isnt more than one!!)
