Youngest daughter Ellen born in Cheltenham... hmm  Looks like it may be same man.  Im not certain what an 'Indenture Settlement' is but I'm guessing it is some form of safe-guard for Ann

If that is his death in South Africa in 1858 aged 56 then that would give him a birth date c. 1802 - that is 10-12 years out from the date that Risey is looking at 1790 ? It seems quite a possiblity tho' .. it looks like he had no sense for money, perhaps Ann left him and took her children or he left and went of to SA..

Only now checked the 1841 Census.

Found a John Bevil, age 40, Auctioneer, NOT born in County + family - address St Georges' Place, Cheltenham, St Mary Parish (ref HO107 353 19 32).

Can't find a John Bevil, b.1790.

Risey, do you have the Census reference for John William Bevil, b. 1790 please?

regards

Judging by what has been found on this thread, John William Bevil assumed a new identitty and became John William Melville.

As far as I know, John William Bevil was born in Romford, Essex 1800, his parents were John Bevil and Mary Ann Skinner. He married a widow, Ann Jessop, in Oxford. They lived in Cheltenham where he was a tobacconist, and declared bankrupt. 1828
He was again in business in Cheltenham as an agent and 1840 was again declared bankrupt, but this was repealed in 1841
He does appear on the 1841 census but then vanishes. I think he possibly went to New Zealand.
He was defiantly alive when his wife died in Bristol in 1846, as he took an oath when her Will was proven

On the 1841 Census there is a John Bevil, an Auctioneer, age 40, not born County with Ann 40, John 15, Jane 12 and Helen 7. Is this "your" John (William) Bevil?
