POW Stalag 3A
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 08:26 BST (UK) »
Would anybody be able to tell me anything else out about Lance Sergeant Eugene Cosgrove of the Irish Guards,or his time as a prisoner of war?

Army No: 2717281

Camp No: 3A

Prisoner of War No: 8187

Camp type: STALAG

Camp location: Luckenwalde

I've never ventured into anything as recent as WW2 :)

Many thanks

Carol

I think the best course of action to take would be to check if he made a Report when Liberated. Sadly not all did.

IF he did it should be in File WO 344/74/1. He is listed as being in Stalag 383 Hohenfels in 1944.
There are Red Cross reports available for both Camps but before going down that route I would check WO 344/74/1 as the POW Lists contain many errors and he could have been in other Camps.

Carol,
unless you know there is a Report in the File Kew will tell you to employ a researcher to look into it.

Had a look through the File today Carol and he doesn't seem to have made a report.
There was only one Cosgrove from the 3rd Btn.Irish Guards and his name was Thomas who came from Liverpool.

Brian,

Thanks very much for trying.

I think my cousin may well have to apply for his war service record then?

Regards

Carol

Hi Carol
My father was Eugene's nephew and I am his great nephew. I have a copy of his service records.  What relationship was Eugene to you?
Regards
Owen Martin

Hi Carol
Eugene was with the 2nd Battalion Irish Guards and was captured after the battle for Boulogne in 1940. His military records are held with the Guards Division and you need to demonstrate your relationship with him as well as evidence of his passing (death cert). I received a copy of his records a number of years back and I will send you a copy (just need to find where I stored the scanned version). would love to know what happened to Eugene post WW2, I know he married a Nellie Gresty in London but that as far as I got. His grave is in Clones, Co. Monaghan close to my Grandmothers and his parents grave. If you have any queries
All the best
Owen
