HOUGHLAND family
« on: Sunday 03 July 11 20:10 BST (UK) »
My mother is interested in finding out if her father's grandmother's family are still in existance. Anne Houghland (around 1800) lived in Ruabon near Wrexham and was sent to a convent in France when her father remarried. She must have returned to the UK at some point where she married a Bridden but we don't have any further information. We do know she wove tapestries depicting rural scenes of France.
Many thanks for your help.
Anne

Perhaps this is her?

1881 census, Reference RG11, Piece 3590, Folio 86, Page 48
Egerton Place, Liscard, Birkenhead

Bridden, James  Head  M  80  Weighing Machine Keeper  b Altone, Staffs.
Bridden, Ann  Wife F  77  b Ruabon, Denbighshire
Briden, Edwin  Son  M  45  Clerk Local Board  b Chester
Bridden, William T  Son  M  35  Joiner & Builder  b New Brighton

If this is indeed her, Ann & James seem to have stayed many years in Liscard.
1851 census finds them also:
Tudworth Lodge, Liscard

Bridden, James  Head  M  47  Gardener  b Alton, Staffordshire
Bridden, Ann  Wife  F  46  b Ruabon, Denbighshire
Bridden, Edwin  Son  M  15  Brokers Clerk  b Marley Hill, Montgomeryshire
Bridden, Henry  Son  M  13  Scholar  b Marley Hill, Montgomeryshire
Bridden, John  Son  M  11  Scholar  b Marley Hill
Bridden, William  Son  M  5  Scholar  b Liscard

Thanks so much for replying so promptly and giving us a valuable piece of information.
Am I right in thinking that the 'b' stands for 'born in' - if so why are two of her children registered as being born in different places? I can't seem to find any Marley Hill in Montgomeryshire but there seems to be one in Durham (why would she have had her chidlren in Durham)? How would we go about finding out if any of their children are still alive (my mother is Henry Bridden's grand-daughter).

What a great source of information the web site is!

The boys places of birth changed with every census, and it was definitely Montgomeryshire! But looks like Machynlleth to me?

In 1861, Edwin was down as born in Machynlleth, Merionethshire, and William was born in Liscard

In 1871, both boys (still unmarried!) were apparently born in Wallasey, Cheshire.

I have attached a snip of the 1851 census - of the birth place column.

So, of the 4 brothers, only Henry and James left home.
In 1861 James was lodging as a Domestic Gardener in Croxteth Hall Lane, West Derby, Liverpool. He says he was born in Wales.

In 1871 he is in Stretford, Chorlton, Lancashire:
Reference RG10, 3973, 94, 3

Bridden, John  Head  M  31  Domestic Servant (Gardener)  b Cheshire, New Brighton
Bridden, Sara W G  F  28  b Tintern, Monmouthshire
Bridden, Gerogieanne  F  1  b Manchester

In 1881, reference RG12, 3203, 150, 12
Claremont Lodge, Eccles Old Road, Pendleton, Salford

Bridden, John  Head  M  51  Gardener Domestic  b New Brighton
Bridden, Sarah  Wife  F  48  b Tintern, Monmouthshire
Bridden, Ethel  Daughter  F  19  Milliner  b Hulme, Lancs.
Bridden, William  Son  M  17  Seed Trade  b Weaste, Lancashire
Bridden, Emeline  Daughter  F  11  Scholar  b Pendleton
Bridden, George  Son  M  7  Scholar  b Pendleton

On RootsChat we can't mention living people, so there is only so much we can do for you.
You need to follow the people through the census returns.
We can't even mention information from the 1911 census - as that is protected by copyright

The Montgomeryshire mystery remains unsolved!
Do you happen to know if John Bridden went on to marry or do you have any record of his death?
Thanks once again.

Have a look at this thread

www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,261434.0.html

Which gives some advice on tracing living relatives.

Also I edited my previous post!!  ;D
