1891 Census (and Yiddish newspapers) help!
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 00:18 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm a labour historian based in Christchurch, New Zealand. I'm trying to find out when my research subject left Latvia for Glasgow. I have him placed in Glasgow in 1897 (marriage) and 1901 (Census).

A lot of immigrants came via London, so I would love for someone to check the 1891 Census to see if he was there then, as this will narrow down my dates.

His name is Philip Josephs, occupation Tailor. He was Jewish. His father was Simon Josephs, and his mother was Rachel Josephs.

Thanks!

Also, does anyone read Yiddish? And feel like going to the British Library newspapers?  ;D

1901 entry gives birthyear 1877 - nothing on either English or Scottish 1891 census for him
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)
