Jane Routledge ms Wilson - Maybole
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 20:57 BST (UK) »
One last bit of my husband's tree to try to complete, hopefully, with some help from the Rootchatters!

I have Jane Wilson born c 1851 Maybole, Ayrshire who married Peter Routledge in Maybole, 8 December 1871. They already had a child, Mary, born 31 Oct 1871.  According to their marriage record her parents were John Wilson and Susan ms Parker. Both are deceased at this time.

I have been trying to find Jane on any census prior to her marriage with no luck. Would like to be able to find out where/when her parents were born but can't find them either.

This is about the only part of the tree where I can't find the 4 x Gt grandparents since I can't find John and Susan for clues further back.

Any suggestions or help would be most appreciated.

If you search FREECEN for Sussana Wilson born 1817 you'll find what I'm sure are Jane's parents and siblings Samuel and Alexander at Bog, Maybole. According to a submission at the IGI the boys' mother was Susan Parker.

John is on his own with Samuel and another son William in 1851. A look at the original should show if he was a widower.

In 1851 and 1861 there is a Jane Wilson born about 1849 living with her Aunt Margaret and Uncle Samuel Russell.

I wonder if Sus(s)an(a) died when Jane was born and she was brought up by Samuel and Margaret.

Only thing is I can't find a death for a Margaret Russell/Parker or Wilson at Maybole.

Thanks for that Cookies - think you are right and that is the family. Found the IGI for William too which confirms his parents are John and Susanna. The occupation of John as cotton hand loom weaver ties in with the info on Jane's marriage record which says he was a cotton weaver. I see on the 1851 census he has changed his place of birth from Ireland to Straraer!

I found a marriage record in 1846 for Samuel Russell on IGI which says wife is Margaret Armstrong. Maybe the niece was a bit loosely applied - I can't see another Jane born the right time with a mother with maiden name Russell or Armstrong. Odd that one of the sons is called Samuel too though - maybe cousins or something.

So thank you -at least gives me a rough date of birth and place for John and Susanna, though I guess I'm unlikely to ever be able to trace their parents.

Oops - just looked at the age of Samuel and Margaret on 1851 Freecen. Not that likely to have got married in 1846 are they! Would be rather old for aunt/uncle too. Although both born in Ireland so could be aunt/uncle to Jane's parents perhaps?
