Assistance reading an 1851 census entry
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 22:17 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am having trouble reading the enumerator's handwriting for a place of birth in Wiltshire (and the person's name).

I am looking at HO107/1841/369 - Winsley:
I can't make out the name and place of birth of the person below Joseph Smallcombe in the third household on this page.

Can anyone help, please?

P
Smallcombe
Pead
Layton
Waltham
Carpenter (Somerset)
Revell (Plymouth, East London)
Lake (East Anglia)
Bradbeer
Verteneuil (France, Belgium)
Haneman

Hmmm... in 1861 Benjamin is still in the Winsley area (hamlet of Haugh), his birthplace given as Haugh, Wiltshire: RG9/1299/54/14.

His likely death: Benjamin SMALLCOMB, Jun qtr 1865, Bradford on Avon 5A 81.

Then it's more than time they updated things.  Avon hasn't existed for years   ::)

wikipedia has Binegar in Somerset

The OS has some county boundary maps at

www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/freefun/outlinemaps/

Unfortunately they don't have any towns marked - so they don't help much (who's bright idea was that?)  ::)

All I can say is that Binegar is not MY part of Somerset!

Although I did used to work in Paulton - not too far away.
Maybe that's where I remember the name from?
