Many thanks Majm.

My perplexing thoughts are around several facts.
She didn't name the father.
She took on Hutton as a surname for a while.
She returned to Williams.
I know that you can call yourself any name you choose, but in 1913, if he was the father and, by that stage the daughter would have been 7, and Hilda was calling herself Hutton, why, given the times, didn't they marry.
And then he just ups and leaves and has lots of girl "friends" who he writes to, and one who was special and she married someone else.
When he returns he goes back to the country and after a while married my grandmother, who he was devoted to.

Why not marry?  (Why marry ! ..... as my late Gran would say)

Well, the feminist movement was actually fairly strong around that time in NSW.  Women got the vote, and from my own family history, there's many a woman who not only had their children without a formal slip of paper, but also allowed the baby's grandparents to raise the child as though their own.....  A new 'nation', a new century, a new monarch, and females with voting rights....  Women even had the right to seek a divorce.  :o  :o  :o

Cheers,  JM

Perhaps the most obvious barrier to a couple marrying in that era would be their respective families religion.

LOL.
Totally understand the feminist movement stuff, and if that is how she felt, why take his name for a short while? And the grandmother didn't raise the child from what I have been led to believe.

Not sure about the respective religions......but Jack was an Anglican who was raised by Catholic nuns, so I would be surprised if religion was a stumbling block.I will follow that line of reasoning with the family though.

Majm : that is the entry I was after.Did it give a house number??
Hilda was not married to Jack, and she had a daughter, father unnamed, and she later claimed that Jack was the father. This is the mystery I am trying to sort out.
Hilda should have been Hilda Williams on the roll, and I believe that Jack was boarding with her family (Elizabeth being the mother).

MAjm : did Jack and Hilda live at 224 Cowper with the Williams?

NSW Electoral Roll 1913 WAVERLEY, polling Waverley
HUTTON  Hilda, Cowper St, domestic duties
HUTTON  John, Cowper St, jockey

NO OTHERS by that surname for that polling place.

There is absolutely no way from the above to confirm IF these two even knew each other, much less were related to each other.  Afterall, the roll does not include their respective titles or the house name or number of their respective residences.

But there's nothing on the electoral roll that shows how anyone at 224 Cowper Street is related to anyone else at that same address, nor does it show if Hilda HUTTON lived at 224 Cowper or if John HUTTON lived at 224 Cowper.

Reply #10 does show a connection between those listed at 224 Cowper, although, I agree the roll like all E rolls, does not specify a relationship.

It is clear now that Elizabeth Vivian WILLIAMS was the mother of Hilda Louise, but nothing to say WILLIAMS and HUTTON shared any specific address.

Thanks, cupoflife.

I had previously found this, and indeed Nellie was a well known performer as Hutton.

Was hoping to tie down the period just before the war for both Jack and Hilda.

Could you please cite the birth of John Thomas HUTTON.

I can see from his WW1 records he states 1889, but what are the other sources of your information regarding his birth and his parentage?
