NORMANDALE Scarborough
« on: Saturday 30 April 05 23:18 BST (UK) »
Hi all!

I have just seen the marriage certificate for my 3xgreat-grandparents, William Hodgson MACKINGS and Jane NORMANDALE. They married at St Mary's Scarborough on 26 Dec 1846.

Jane was a name given to several NORMANDALES in the 1820s so I can't identify her parents from the IGI. As luck would have it, there is no father's name on the marriage certificate!

However and this is where I'm hoping someone might be able to help, one of the witnesses was a Benjamin NORMANDALE. The chances are this is Jane's brother, and the only one on the IGI is the son of Robert and Mary christened 1846.

Could someone with access to St Mary's records tell me if there were any other Benjamins and the parents' names please?

In hope,  ;D

Thanks Moira for looking. I thought I was on to a good thing!!!

I wonder who this mysterious Benjamin is (I even looked again at the cert. to check it did say Benjamin!)

Just a thought - can you see the marriage of any other Jane NORMANDALEs? If so. do any of them mention the father? That might eliminate some of the possibilities.

Thanks again.

HI JAN, RIGHT, THERE IS ONLY ONE JANE NORMANDALE & SHE WAS CH 22/10/1808 AT SCARBORO, PARENTS WILLIAM NORMANDALE & ANN, ALSO SISTER ANN CH 17/08/1807.

JANE NORMANDALE MARRIAGE 21/03/1789 SCARBORO TO JOHN TWAITES.

I TOO FOUND THAT BENJAMIN ON IGI, BUT THEN I WENT ONTO FREECEN & FOUND THE DEATH OF A BENJAMIN IN SCARBORO 1890 AGE 66YRS, BIRTH 1824, DEC QTR 9D 251, COULD THIS BE THE BENJAMIN YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.

ALSO ANOTHER BENJAMIN GOT MARRIED IN STEPNEY MIDDLESEX 1848 JUNE QTR, HIS BRIDE COULD HAVE BEEN FROM THERE.

LOOKING ON THE 1881 CENSUS, THE BENJAMIN BORN IN 1824 WAS MARRIED BUT NO WIFE LISTED, ONLY A SON-IN-LAW CALLED BENJAMIN, THEN THERE WAS A BENJAMIN MARRIED IN SCARBORO TO AN ELIZA BIRD, BUT IS IT THE SAME ONE LISTED HAS A SON-IN-LAW, & WHY IS HE THAT & NOT A SON, WITH THE SAME NAME.

 ??? Help!  ???

Thanks for all this work, but am more lost than ever.

This is the info from Family Search that has me confused.

JANE NORMANDALE   BAP 03 APR 1825
Father: WILLIAM NORMANDALE
Mother: JANE

JANE NORMANDALE   BIRTH 26 MAR 1825   Death: 1888
Father:  JOHN NORMANDALE
Mother: ANN

JANE NORMANDALE  BAP 23 APR 1826
Father: JOHN NORMANDALE
Mother: ANN

JANE NORMANDALE  BAP 19 NOV 1826
Father: JOHN NORMANDALE
Mother: ARABELLA

I've just looked on freebmd for deaths (I'm assuming that's why Jane's father is not named on the mariage cert.) No deaths up to her marriage for John BUT

Deaths Sep 1841
NORMANDALE  William    Scarbro'  24 311

Jane married in December 1846. I wonder if you would be able to look up burials in that time to see if any Johns died and if their next of kin were named; and also William, to see if this was Mary's husband.

I am now so confused!!!!

Hi Janmoore

A long time since you posted your message but.....I can shed some light on Benjamin Normandale, he married Jane Anderson (they were my gt gt gt grandparents) on 5th June 1848 in Stepney, London - he abandoned his wife hence why no wife is listed on the census and there are some very strange goings on with the census records. He didnt live his wife but several doors down instead.

From the marriage certificate I obtained for Ben his father was John Normandale and I believe his mother may have been Catherine. I know that he had at least one sister who was called Mary (the witness were Thomas Normandale and Charlotte Page).

I have no idea why they were in London because he was a ships carpenter born in Scarborough and she was born in Hackness, Yorkshire.

I hope this helps somewhat if you found out anything more I would be grateful to hear from you.

Another one to add, I had forgotten but I found my Benjamin on the 1841 census, living at the Seamans Hospital in Scarborough and he wasnt the only entry;

Jane b.1796
Mary b.1821
Catherine b.1826
Jane b.1826
Catherine b.1776
Mary b.1821
Benjamin b.1826

The way the census is split up I had assumed that Catherine was Mary & Bens mother but if this is the case she had them when she was very old OR she is their grandmother and Jane b.1796 is their aunt?
