Trying to find parents?
« on: Sunday 10 July 11 02:17 BST (UK) »
Hi there
I have an ancestor Hibbins SHANKS born in Huntingdonshire in 1860 in the 1861 Census it has him as the grandson of Phebe SHANKS? I am trying to find who his parents were? Will I have to get his birth certificate to find out the parents?
Thank you
Jenny from Townsville Qld

Hi,
Just had a look on Camdex and there are a couple of male Shanks that got married in the district of Huntingdonshire that could fit as the father of Hibbins.

William Shanks married a Miss Rolls in 1859
John Shanks married a Miss Newman in 1852

phebe did also have a son john baptised on 15th may 1821
there is a john aged 42 and sarah shanks on the 1861 census john gives birthplace as bluntisham
so there are still 2 possibilities
william/rachael
john/sarah
so you will need the birth cert of hibbins shanks to determine which of these it is
cattell,alcester
vickers,sulgrave
hewish,holborn
manley,bethnal green
barnes,bassingbourn

I think there's a third possibility. In 1861 grandmother Phebe Shanks had an unmarried daughter Phebe Shanks 22 living with her. Hibbins Shanks could have been her illegitimate son, with Hibbins being a none too subtle hint as to who the father was

Get the birth certificate!

It's the third possibility!

Phebe Shanks, father Thomas, married Thomas Harmes at Hampton Wick Middlesex on 23 July 1865

In 1871 Thomas 26 Harmes and wife Pheobe Harmes 30 b Bluntisham were living at Hampton Wick with son Hibbin Harmes 10 b Bluntisham.
