Lestrange family
« on: Sunday 10 July 11 16:29 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to trace my paternal grandmother.  According to my dad's birth certificate she was Phyllis Lestrange wife of Mark Webb.  She died in 1937 in Scarborough, Yorkshire and her death certificate lists her as Phyllis Winifred Manly-Smith, widow of James Manly-Smith. Unfortunately my dad was 12 when she died so has no information about her.  We have been told the family also has links in Ireland and wonder if anyone has been researching this family and knows of a Phyllis.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks
Yelsel

How old was she when she died? and was Lestrange her maiden name?

No, we have not found her on any census records under any of the names we have.

I can't find her in either 1901 or 1911 Irish census as Lestrange (or is it Lestange as in your last post?).

Lestrange is a rare name in Ireland, mostly in Westmeath in Dublin - only 215 individuals in 1901.

Sometimes spelt L'Estrange and other variants.

L'Estrange (the stranger) is an old French Huguenot name and another variation is Strang.
Before trying to find an Irish connection you need to find more information on your grandmother.

Without mentioning recent family details, I'm wondering about the wording of your first post "According to my dad's birth certificate she was Phyllis Lestrange wife of Mark Webb." Have you found this marriage certificate yet? and have you found the marriage to Mr. Manly-Smith? both of these should list her father's name and occupation.
