trying to find birth record Chester
« on: Sunday 01 May 05 09:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a birth registration in Chester, I have no idea where about in Chester.

My gg grandfather was born 1837/38 Cheshire Chester, going by all census records from 1841-1891, he died in 1895 aged 58

His name is William Clarke, (could be William Bishop Clarke on birth reg) but not sure.

From Census of 1841, William's parents were James Clarke and Martha.   Census 1841 gives address as 7 Crane Bank Holy Trinity Chester.  His father's occupation was Lock Keeper

I have looked on Cheshirebmd, there are a few William Clarke's on there, but I would not know which one would be the right one, not knowing Chester myself!  This is proving to be a big headache for me.

If anyone can help, I would be so grateful.

Thanks

Jan

Hi Jan
Looking back at the 1841 census it gives Williams age as 4 this would make his birth outside the range of cival registration which did not start until July 1837. You need a lookup at the records office from the parish records. If you send an email to the address on this link, give them his birthdate and address they will reply fairly quickly.
They will usually search a few years for free,so its worth a try.

good luck

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info, I will certainly give it a try, I have been racking my brain trying to find a birth record, I realised that he could have been born before registration began, how inconsiderate of him lol.

I will let you know how I get on.
 :)
thanks
