Nathan Simpson & Elizabeth Alderson
« on: Tuesday 12 July 11 21:21 BST (UK) »
Nathan Simpson and Elizabeth Alderson married in Grinton in 1847. He was a leadminer as were some of the Aldersons  who died in the 1860s.The 1861 census shows that he and his  family were living in Smarber ( Melbecks ). Does anyone who is particularly researching either of these families know which mine(s) he worked in? The widowed Elizabeth Simpson and some other members of her family eventually moved , as did other families from North Yorkshire , to Liverpool to be cowkeepers.

Hello and thanks for your reply and for pointing me to that website; quite fascinating! From the "Old Newspaper Extracts" section I was able to find the announcement of Nathan Simpson's death in 1863 in the Leeds Mercury. Also discovered from a Northern Echo extract that one of his sons who, as I previously knew was actually called Simpson Alderson and was a miner like his father was accused in 1876 of trying to murder his wife with a knife!
From the Dales Genealogy site and from looking at old maps I think it's highly likely that Nathan probably worked in the Old Gang or Sir Francis mines. He did also farm and the experience from that obviously helped his widow Elizabeth when she moved to Liverpool to become a cowkeeper.

Thanks again.
