COMPLETED - Three Chevrons and a Grenade arm patch?

I have a photograph of my Grandad in WW2 and he has three chevrons and a grenade on his uniform.

Could someone please tell me if Royal Engineer Sergeants were the only ones to wear these?

Staff sergeant Royal Engineers if the grenade has nine flames, if only seven flames Royal Artillery.
