1 Harris Hill Droitwich
« on: Sunday 17 July 11 12:42 BST (UK) »
Hello,

My grandmother is listed on her birth certificate as being born at 1 Harris Hill, Droitwich, on 20 Feb 1920.

Her mother was Rose Cupper, b. 18 Oct 1898. Her father is not listed on the birth certificate and I have no information on who he was.

As far as I know, no such address existed at this time. My theory is that this was a euphemistic address for a workhouse infirmary, based solely on the fact that there was a "Union Workhouse" at Harris Hill listed on the 1881 census.

As far as I know, the only way to confirm this address is through local knowledge. Basically, I was looking to see if anyone from the area knew anything about this address and what happened there, anything that would prove or disprove my theory.

Thanks,
Clare.

Hi Clare

I've lived in Droitwich most of my life and never came across Harris Hill.  However a quick Google search revealed that it was close to the Workhouse.

Sorry I couldn't find anything more

Hello, yes this is a a euphemistic address for the workhouse. It took me years of searching for 1 Harris Hill to discover this.

This 1884 old OS map shows it as Harriss Hill.
