William MILFORD/Sarah EMERY
« on: Monday 18 July 11 05:30 BST (UK) »
Any information on William Milford, portmanteau maker, born abt 1823, Bath, died 1892, Bath and Sarah Emery, born abt 1824 in Shepton Mallet, died 1874 in Bath.

They married in Bath in 1858 and had nine children, Charlotte, Martha, Charles, Henry, Thomas, Elizabeth, James Emery, Sarah & Alice.

After Sarah's death he married a Jane ??? and there were at least two more children, Frederick & Clara.

I have found the family on the Census 1861 - 1891.
milford, greenhalgh, childs, norman, (england) tripcony, drew, thomas, boddy (cornwall), hendry, harrold, riach, gray, grant (scotland)

Hi Emjaye
I'm presuming you have Wm in 1851 census with his first wife Charlotte?
Is it 1841 you need for him & Sarah?
Thank you

Hi Wozzle
They were both born in Shepton Mallet. I can find Sarah in 1841 but not Charlotte, together I mean.
Do you think he could have married Eliza Jane Hardwick, dec 1874?
Sarah died in sept qtr.
Wm doesn't stay widowed very long!!

Thank you Wozzle & Tina.......no, I didn't have the 1851 Census, but I do now.  Should have payed closer attention to the children's ages on the 1861 Census.  The older children obviously belong to the marriage to Charlotte.  Have now also found him in 1841, at home with his parents Thomas (Trunk Maker) and Mary.  His brother Thomas is also on the 1841/51 Census with him.

It does seem likely that the wives were sisters, since both are listed as born in Shepton Mallet.

Many thanks............Emjaye

yes i thought that was a possibility as well but that marriage was in axbridge
and on the 1881 census jane says born bath 1844
i could not find a birth in 1842-1846 of an eliza jane hardwick
there is a birth in axbridge in 1855 of an eliza jane hardwick think this is probably her
plus there is a william milford and eliza milford on the 1881 census eliza down as born burnham, somerset they have a daughter aged 5 with them
axbridge is the reg dist for burnham
so i think we can discount eliza jane hardwick
