Lyall/Lill - were these names interchangeable?- Completed
« on: Monday 18 July 11 09:51 BST (UK) »
I have Lyalls and Lills in my family - and am confused because sometime records for the same people are under both names - sometimes in one lot of records they are Lyalls and in another they are Lills. I am very confused!!

If you have an accent and pronounce the name leeall then yes they are interchangeable, when the spelling is in the ear of the writer

Remember before the 19th century there was no standard spelling. Shakespeare spelt his own name three different ways in his own will.

Thank you both.

So with the really old records, should I just assume -as long as things fit and I'll just add notes about the surname.

Yes, I would but I would make sure everything was carefully referenced in order to obviate future problems, when an interloper appears as they always will.
