'Brizer' first name - suggestions?
« on: Saturday 23 July 11 12:50 BST (UK) »
Hallo.

Samuel RADFORD (b1849 Old Warden, Bedfordshire) married Charlotte ARNOLD (b1850) in 1871 at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.

In the 1871 census Samuel and Charlotte are at Cemetery Street, Biggleswade with their first child Charles.

In 1881 Samuel's wife is clearly given as 'Brizer'. Confirming that this is the right family is the presence of children Charles, Minnie, Nelly and Frederick, albeit with spelling corrections - NB.

By 1891 she has reverted to Charlotte.

Can we simply blame the 1881 census taker? The children's names were spelled wrong, but corrected. 'Brizer' doesn't remotely resemble 'Charlotte'. I can't find any other record where Brizer is used as a first name. Nor does Brizer look like a misspelled version of ARNOLD - though BRIZER is a surname.

What do you think might have happened here?

Any thoughts gratefully received!

I doubt you'll ever know: the Enumerator copied the Household Schedule (supposed to have been completed by someone literate in the Household) into the online image you see....

Was the writing atrocious? Was Samuel using some sort of pet name on an official document?

The Enumerator made some other mistakes it seems, and corrected them, which suggests that he had no problem with 'Brizer' .....

Thanks.

I am also looking for informaiton on Charlotte "Brizer" Arnold.  Her first son Charles is my mother's grandfather.  I have pictures of Charlotte as well as her marriage certificate to Samuel.  There is a Charlotte B Arnold born in 1850 and her middle name is Brown.   Charlotte Brown Arnold.

Your entry is what made me sign up for roots chat.  I was wondering if you have done much research on Samuel Radford.  There are two Samuel Radfords born in Biggleswade.  One in 1848 and one in 1849.  I am curious who the parents are of Samuel Radford husband to Charlotte Arnold.

Looking forward to any information.

Radbrize needs to have made two or three posts before he or she can receive PMs.  so if that's how you have tried to make contact, LDW, it won't work yet as he/she has only made one post so far.

Now Radbrize should have received email notifications that we have all posted and come back soon.

Only needs to make 1 more post (reply to these) and the personal message (pm) system will be up and running for you both.
