Nearest church to Penrifhwer
« on: Monday 25 July 11 20:40 BST (UK) »
What is most likely to be the church nearest to Penrihfwer?  It was a second marriage in 1906.  It appears the first wife died that year and he married again.  I do know that they used Trealaw cemetery for the burial of both the first wife and William when he died, but I am not sure if they would have gone there to get married.

The names were William  (James) Evans aged 61 and Bessie Sheppard (I think it was the name she would have married under as her children have that name) aged 45.

Thank you.

Are you talking Church and Chapel?
There was a Zoar Chapel not far away in Pen-y-graig.

Hello  :)

Have you found them on 1911 Census? We're not allowed to post 1911 details on here because of copyright, but if you can find them it will say how long they had been married.

Penrhiwfer was in Llantrisant Parish, so here's the Genuki list of Chapels:

Kind Regards
Morgan

Thanks for the replies.  I have found them on the 1911 census and they had been married for 3 years.

I have looked on the link that Morgan gave but it doesn't give Trealaw church or would it have gone under another name?  I don't know the area very well so am not sure of the closest church as the crow flies so to speak.  But if the second wife was of a particular church I assume they would have got married there.

Would I be able to apply for their marriage certificate with the information I have got?

I have no idea whether it would be a church or a chapel so I'm including both.

Thanks

you don't need to know where they married to get a certificate from the GRO. The reference to order is dec qtr 1907 Pontypridd vol 11a pg 1050 William Evans & Elizabeth Sheppard on the same page.
Usually you can get the reference from FreeBmd, but in this case there's a query over the page number for Elizabeth so that the 2 names do not show up on the same page.

You can order using this site using the ref above

thanks for that osprey.  i may order a certificate but it would be useful if I knew the name of the church and the date on which they married.  Of course it poses another question what happened to the wife and her children when William died only 5 years later, that's the trouble it always poses more questions!
