7th (city of london) battallion
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 16:12 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was killed in France April 1918, he was with the 7th (city of London) battalion. He was conscripted in 1917.
I would like to obtain a copy of his army records, does anybody know where these records are held and did they survive, I know some records from the first world war were destroyed.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Maddy.

Can you post his name...If it survives theres a 99% chance its on Ancestry...Just be aware though odds are against it only about 30% of records survive.
His Medal Card should be available though.

Hi Maddy

You do not have to visit the National Archives in this case. The only remaining item is the unit's war dairy and this is apparently available  for download for £3.50. Very few Other Ranks are mentioned by name. But you will get an idea of what was going on at the time of his death

Beware though as it comprises three documents totaling almost 90 Mb in size.

Thanks for your reply Ken, sorry about not getting back to you sooner.
I am a bit worried about downloading this, could you explain to me what it involves (your warning).
I am not a computer whiz kid, just a worried old pensioner ;D
Regards Maddy.

Hi Mddy

My warning was only to do with the size of the download. Some people still use dial-up so 90Mb will take a long long time, and therefore expensive. Others are on a limit of so many megabytes a month. I did not want you to go over your limit - which is very expensive. If you have unlimited broadband it will not be a problem.

Hi Ken
Thankyou for your help. I have downloaded the file, brilliant, have read all about where my grandfather was and what he was doing when he got killed. It made me feel so sad.
Thanks again
Maddy.
