A mystery from a Llanteg tombstone.
Trying to help a relative with this.
A John Lloyd   married Sarah Jane James in about 1900, she is listed as being married and living at Ruel Wall Farm, Crunwear Llanteg Pembs) with her parents in the 1901 Census, (but no husband present)
Again in the 1911 Census she is married with children, living at Llangwm, Lampeter Velfrey, Whitland - but no husband living with her.
Her husband John Lloyd has his grave in Crunwere Churchyard, Llanteg, and it reads,
Died age 44 years 11 November 1918 in D. Lovat Canada
Descendants have found on 1901 Census a John Lloyd A B Seaman as Crew on the Vessel Mary Catherine in Milford Haven. This John is shown as married and the right age and born in Pembroke.  From that it appears he was in the Navy or Merchant Navy.

Seems he died the day war ended, but not even sure what D. Lovat means/where it is.

Anyone have any idea that could help my friend trace this person and his death?

Thanks - yes I think there's also a ghost town in Ontario - but not sure which one he was at - if either.

Or if he was buried out there and only recorded on the gravestone - rather than actually being buried back here.

Not able to get to R.O. to check burial Reg. or local papers to see what is recorded so thought I'd see if others had any ideas?

There are 15 Canadian’s killed/died during 1918 whilst on active service, none are listed as Canadian Navy or M.N.
From a separate source there are confirmed no seaman either Naval or M.N. killed during November of 1918 with a Canadian connection.
On the off chance your John Lloyd had emigrated to Canada pre W.W. 1 but returned like so many others to fight for the old country, I can confirm there are no Lloyd’s who appear in the British R.N. or M.N. killed on active service in Nov 1918.

From my database of military headstones related to Pembrokeshire covering 1722 to 2006 I do note for your interest a Pvte W.H. Lloyd serving with a Canadian Infantry battalion who was KIA on 9th Apr 1917 plus a Gunner J. Lloyd of the R.G.A. KIA 24th Apr 1917. Both are noted in my research as Tenby Cousins.
I am also aware of a John L. Lloyd of the Canadian Inf KIA 8th Aug 1918. He was of Clarbeston Rd and must therefore be considered unrelated to your research.

I note that John Lloyd mrd Sarah Jane James in the Narberth Reg District (Prob Llanteg) in 4th Qtr of 1900.

Currently it can be confirmed that Sarah Jane James who appears to be the daughter of John James & Sarah Lewis is related to my research on the Oriel’s of Pembrokeshire and their related families.

I would recommend most highly a letter to the following ;
Library and Archives Canada
ATIP and Personal Records Division
Services Branch
395 Wellington St
Ottawa
Ontario
K1A 0N4

The amount of free information supplied to me on military personal concerned with my research into Military headstones related to Pembrokeshire puts to absolute shame the very poor response we get from M.O.D./CWGC et. al.

I would suggest you are more lightly to receive more informed response with a posting to one of the many W.W. 1 forums, on which there are some really true experts, who will quite lightly prove me totally wrong on all counts.

From my transcription of all and complete Parish Registers for Pembroke St Mary and Pembroke St Michael for the years 1711 to the 1950’s, there is no John Lloyd baptised in either Parish around the time of your interest.

The only candidates to fit your John Lloyd was born either 1873 1st Qtr or as John Henry Lloyd 3rd Qtr 1875, in which case the former was baptised at St Petrox in 1873 and clearly listed IGI, and the latter was baptised at Monkton in 1875 and who for some reason is not listed IGI and therefore may have died as an infant.

Hi Crunwere

There is a John Lloyd amongst the Soldiers of the First World War CEF shown here:-

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca

where you are able to view a copy of the front and back of his Attestation Papers - sorry I have not been able to provide a link to the original but if you search the collection you should be able to find him it states:-

Date of Birth 19th Nov 1875
Next of Kin Wife Mrs Sarah J Lloyd -  I think it reads Ruell Wall Crunwere Pembrokeshire Wales

plus additional info

Regards

Z :)

Hello Crunwere  :)

It is worth raising a new request on the Canada board, with a link to this request.
Perhaps he is buried in Lovat cemetery, Bruce County, Ontario?

Kind Regards
Morgan
