I need to find out the parents  of a William Tough born in Premnay 1739.  He married a Jamet Mearns born Insch 15 January 1734  ,

It would seem that the only birth of a William Tough in Premnay in that time era was the 6th August 1727. (Re Scotland's People search, 1720 to 1750 including variants on both surname and forename in Premnay. There are a total of 12 births to the surname "Tough" in Premnay for the 1720 to 1750 time period. Janet Mearns and William Tough married on the 21st August 1759 at Premnay. The problem is although the marriage took place in Premnay, and the papers would have stated "William Tough of this parish" he may not have been born there if he is not the 1727 one.)

Regards

Malky.

Familysearch.org has this possibility........

William Tough, baptised 17 May 1740 at Insch, Aberdeenshire.....father John Tough

Just looking at Google maps, I see that there is a small village called Premnay (not Primnay) less than 2 miles south of Insch....

There is also the marriage of a John Tough to Helen Betty on 22 May 1739 at Insch.......

All looks very promising........

When I began this Family Tree search I discovered all my information on Rootsweb World Connect and they have William Tough down as born 1739 ,   I do trust your information is the correct one because after discusing my research with my mother she remembered an old box of papers she had handed down from  my grandfather William Rettie Tough , It seems he had contacted the "Scots Ancestry Research Society"  in 1950 !!!  and the same dates were found as you have for William Tough  born Aug 6 , 1727 . they even  found his father  being George Tough of Milne of Barns it says the mothers name is not given and it lists their  other  children as Margaret born  April 8,1723, .   Agnes born April 6 , 1725,
Elizabeth  born Oct 4 , 1729 ,  George  born Nov 6 1731 .   Jean born  April 8 1734,  .   Janet born Jan 29  1736 ,   John born Feb 8  1739 .   The last 4 of the children it has as being born  at Auchleven Premnay. It does not say where Williams sisters were born ?  , But that is as far as the history goes , and I wish my mom would have told me about this letter before I began , it would have given me a better head start,  ::)......I am not sure how to go about digging deeper to see what more I can find , I am open to suggestions .......I  do see a pattern that each father names their first son George  ,

Hi
I am descended from Elizabeth Tough, daughter of George of Mill O Barns, born 1729. She married William Shirras from Keig on 22 May 1759. Tomorrow, I am off to Register House in Edinburgh to see if I can find anything relating to George and his family. Will let you know if I strike gold.

Pat

Hello distant cousin !!,   I am very happy you are going to follow up on this mystery , I have been at this one for about a year now ,  lately I have been trying to follow the ships passenger lists for  my  Gr Grampa George Toughs first trip to Canada in 1894 march 15  He came into port in Halifax , I have a hard time reading the handwriting .  Good luck , and let me know what you come up with . I will send you my email too.                            take care     Melanie

I have just come across this post looking into Janet Mearns.  I am descended from Alexander Tough son of William Tough and Janet Mearns.  Would love any more information you have found around this family.  Do you have parents for Janet?

Hello ,

I have not followed Janets line , but I do have a record of marriage for her and William Tough which says she is from the Parish of Leslie . That does not mean she was born there but she was either born in Insch or Premany , I do not know for sure. I will spend some time to find out .

I would be very interested in knowing more about Alexander Tough  and his twin sister Elpat , as there is a lot of mixed up information out there .  Maybe we can exchange information . If you would like I can give you my Email address .

                                                                            Take care Melanie
