Edward Mostyn THELWELL born 1844
« on: Monday 01 August 11 09:29 BST (UK) »
Edward Mostyn THELWELL married Sarah Fenwick nee Hilton in the Sept Q. of 1873 at Ormskirk, Lancashire, England.

Sarah was a widow, late husband Henry a lawyer. She was born in Montego Bay Jamaica in 1829, possibly making her 14 year older than her Thelwell groom....

All I can find about Edward is his birth June Q. 1844 in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales. Cannot find him on any census between 1851-1901 when Sarah declares herself a widow.

Cannot find a firm death for him between his marriage in 1873-1901.

Cannot find either of them on the 1891 census.

I have found several references in newspapers about an Edward Thelwell being called to the Bar and tutoring youngsters in Kensington but without a middle name I don't know if this is the correct person. Sarah's first husband was also a lawyer so possibly a link there.

Any information about this elusive man would be very welcome

Hi

This is strange as he seems to appear  on the 1871  listed in Portland RG10/2006/75/15

Male Convict Establishment, Portland

Edward Mostyn Thelwall, convict,  26, single, Clerk in Post Office, b. Marylebone

It's such an unusual name and correct age.

Hi,

Perhaps a copy of his marriage certificate would be useful.

Lots of write ups in the papers about the crime and trial.

He pleaded not guilty to the theft of the £5 from a registered letter posted in Edinburgh and which was addressed to Mrs Creer, New Brighton, Birkenhead.

An interesting character, mm  ::)

He's  Edward Mostyn Thelwall on the  marriage index. I think that I'd get the cert to check up the information if it were my ancestor/interest.

Thank you so much for the 1851 and 1861 census, now I know his parents.

I'd found a sniff of scandal about this family in the online newspapers. His stepson Collingwood Hilton Fenwick was given a years hard labour in 1888 for stabbing an "unfortunate". The police thought they'd caught Jack the Ripper!

So Ed Mostyn Thelwell married Sarah the older widow in 1873 only 2 years after his release from 5 years jail...... I wonder how on earth they met???????

On the next censuses after their marriage she is described as married but he isn't with her.... I wonder if he was in jail again?

Fascinating! Many thanks to all who are helping with this slippery fellow.
