Bigamous marriage, Hackney.
« on: Monday 01 August 11 10:16 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone, My husband's father deserted his family and remarried bigamously in 1951 in Hackney. We understand that he was charged with bigamy, but we don't know the outcome of the case. His name was Edwin Albert Chivers and he bigamously married Georgina Rimmer. Does anyone have access to Hackney Archives in the Rose Lipman Library Downham Rd, De Beauvoir, N, which holds the back copies of the Hackney Gazette. As we believe it was reported in the Hackney Gazette sometime in late 1951 or 1952. He died in 1964 and Georgina Rimmer in 1991.
Thank you, Sara.

Hi Sara

Researchers in and around London who visit local archives are few and far between. You may have a long wait.

Have you tried Hackney Archives research service?

Hi Dawn, thank you for your reply. I thought it worth a try, just in case anyone was visiting the library or archives. I had a look at the research service cost and decided it was too expensive. Will probably go there myself if nothing comes of this.
Best wishes, Sara.

Hi

I know that the original query was about any newspaper articles, but would someone refresh my memory?
Is there not a 70 year rule about (obtaining/publishing) details of a bigamy case?

If someone would enlighten as to where the light reading may be (or give a precis)?

Thanks

I don't think so, there's info about relatively recent cases here:

http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/s_to_u/sentencing_manual/bigamy/

Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Cheers Jeuel,

Seems straightforward enough for me.

Thanks

Worth bearing in mind that Hackney Archives are closed at the moment, pending a move:
