A stranger
« on: Monday 01 August 11 14:29 BST (UK) »
Help please........

Searching through the burial records for Wivenhoe, occasionally it gives the names of deceased then 'a stranger' does this mean the deceased did not come from that parish, had no relatives to bury them, is so what happened to cost of burial?

Also noted that some of the deceased were noted as servant of ....  Did that make the employer responsible for the burial costs?.

Don't want to make incorrect assumptions, am now in 1600's and writing very strange!

Many thanks

According to "The Local Historian's Encyclopedia" Stranger means a New Resident in a parish, and a sojourner means a temporary resident in a parish.

Great stan, thank you so much, it is hard deciphering writing, and translating it mentally into present day context is interesting.

In the village we live in you need to have resided for at least two generations before you become local!  So am wondering how long you needed to be in a parish before you lost the title 'new resident'.   Ah one answer produces another question!
