Thanks Shane, you are correct, it is a commercial venture between two non government entities. It was a report on the minister launching the site in "Irish Genelogy Society" newsletter,May issue I think gave me the impression that the government had given the site access to the records that are kept in the Archives and NLI.
I was very hopefully when I read that the site was online as I was looking to see if I could move a brick wall or 2 .But I found it disappointing. My major brick wall is as follows if anyone had a sledgehammer or even a chisel>
I have [John Martin wife Margaret] their daughter Charlotte born about 1840's, married Edward Baldwin in Dublin 1863. St Andrews RC
They also has 2 sons Thomas Joseph born 1851 and John born 1852.
I can't find any records for the family before 1851 in Dublin.
I was thinking they came from outside of the city before 1851 maybe during the famine.
At the time of Charlotte's marriage they were living at 6 Grattan Court off Mount St and Margaret is dead. Its a tenement so I have not found any listing.
John is a waiter according to one of his sons marriage certs.
I have found a John Joseph born 1852 St Andrews Westland Row RC and I believe this is John Jnr.
I have found more births for John Martin with a Teresa Dunne in 1862/65/67.
There's John Joseph, Joseph Patrick & Thomas Joseph. I thought maybe he married again but I can;t find a marriage. Or it may not be him at all.
The names John , Joseph, James,Thomas keep popping up each generation but I guess it the same for most Irish RC families.
The other puzzle is John Jnr married his wife Margaret Rohan RC in Liverpool in the CofE. I have done all the maths and I don't think it was a shot gun wedding. I am also told Charlotte is not a RC name either.
I would really like to find them pre 1850. Any suggestions? Regards Ingrid
