Helen McDonald
« on: Sunday 07 August 11 08:45 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I am looking for any trace of Helen McDonald born Comrie c1826.

Last confirmed details I have are on the 1841 census she is living with her parents Ronald McDonald and Elisabeth McNaughton and her brother John age 13 at Mailermore. age 15.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Bruce,

No further forward with Helen but I have managed to track down older brother Alexander (b1801) from one of your earlier posts.
Alexander married a Helen Sharp in Crieff, youngest child William was born 1825.
Looks like they had 10 children in total.

Alexander died 1868 in Dundee, Helen also died in Dundee in1879.

Best Regards
JohnD

Keen to help but need clarification.
Ancestry shows three Helen mcDonalds in Comrie born circa 1826
1)Daughter to Ronald with brother John
2)Daughter to James and Ratchel(shows up at 1851 also)
3)Daughter to John and Christian with brother Alex

Which one are we searching for? :-\

Cambron, from Bruce's first post which showed Helen's parents as Ronald and Elizabeth, likely the first Helen on your list there.

Just wanted to be sure as the reference to an Alexander in 1801 opens up another story.
A Ronald had this son by a Margaret McNaughton not Elisabeth.
None of the 1841 dates add up eg Elisabeth would have been about 14 when she had Margaret(1803) and 16 when she had Archibald(1805).Ronald would have been married twice by 18.
The large gap to Helen in 1826 and John in 1828 raises other questions.
They are not on SP so I guess they were born when Ronald was soldiering. As a long shot try to trace his Regiment's barracks and then look at the English parish records.
Helen didn't get married in Comrie so perhaps she went to England or emigrated after her father died.(He isn't on Comrie death records.)She probably knew she wasn't born in Comrie so if she changed her place of birth that makes her virtually untraceable. :'(

Hi all

Below are a copy of Elizabeth on the 1861 census in Comrie showing her age as 77years

and her death in 1864 showing her age as 78 years.

I have copies of death certs for all the children except Helen and all show parents as Ronald McDonald and Elisabeth McNaughtan.

As Cambron say's the OPR for Alexander shows mother as Margt. Although the writing on the document leaves a lot to be desired with records writen on top of one another.
