MS Office lost disc
« on: Tuesday 09 August 11 12:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Last year I bought Microsoft office from PC World.  I downloaded it and used it frequently but unfortunately the disc was lost during a house move.  And when my computer bit the dust last week I rang PC World in the hope that, as I have the receipt, they could issue me with a licence key or some such.  This happened when a friend lost a game that they had bought and a key was given and it was typed in and all was fine.

As I am typing this I am realising that I have to have a disc!  And a key would not work.

MSOffice cost £69.99 and now costs £89.99!  I have downloaded the short version of MS Office starter pack but it is Powerpoint that I really need.

Does anyone have any bright ideas, please?

Hiya

"bit the dust" - what happened? Is the hard disk still ok?

If the hdd is still around and functioning, you may be able to retrieve the key

The license key is all important - you can download the software, but it's useless without the key.

A good alternative is to use OpenOffice instead - pretty much all the features at zero cost (including their Powerpoint equivalent - called Impress).  http://www.openoffice.org/

It will open all your old Office files so you won't lose anything.

The mother board is defunct!  I don't know about the HD.  If it is OK it would likely cost as much to get at it as buying a new disk?  Open Office is a good ideaa will lookinto that.  Thanks for your thoughts,

Just thinking out aloud.

If you/a friend could mount the drive in another case or caddy, then Belarc Advisor (free) "MAY" be able to find it.

Never tried it in that way but you never know

Thanks Ray.  Unfortunately my friends are about as illiterate as me when it comes to computers!
Looks as though I shall have to shell out.

Will have a look at Open Office.

If it was a genuine copy of a Microsoft product, then it would have been authenticated by Microsoft the first time you used it. That being the case, Microsoft will have you on file as a genuine product owner. Having you on file, you will be able to download it from them, and they will supply you with a new authenticity code. I do this with Microsoft products every time I change to a new computer.

Malky.

I got Powerpoint by simply Googleing 'Free Microsoft Powerpoint Download'. Several Microsoft offers came up direct from Microsoft. Good Luck.
