Dear Glen - The Friends of the Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery in Alton (Hampshire) published an article in Alton Papers no.14 called ‘Emigration, Alton to New Zealand, 1841-1844’. In it were listed the families who went from the Alton area to help create the Second Colony - Nelson. Among them were James and Mary Winter, their 2 sons, 2 daughters and 3 Page step-sons from Bentworth.
Below are the details from their application form as well as those from the form of a William Winter from Selborne. You have probably seen these already I expect.

Selborne      John Waterman

I have also come across an ‘Estate agent's auction notice for the sale of an estate in Bentworth near Alton in Hampshire. The auction is to take place at the Swan Inn (Alton) on the 14th July 1837.
The property has been divided into three separate lots, which consists of about 46 acres and includes a farmhouse (with outer buildings) and two cottages. The sale has been brought about by the death of the owner a William Winter. Joseph Jordan is the presiding auctioneer and estate agent. William Goodchild, Edward Holdaway and W. Winter (the son, I presume.) are residing tenants who have been given notice. Clement and Newman are the Southampton solicitors.
Attached to this notice at the reverse is a similar sized sheet of paper which has handwritten details of the eventual sale along with the conditions of sale contained on two pages. It seems as if one of the tenants (Goodchild) was able to purchase two of the lots and a James Giddens purchased the other.’

The Will of William Winter, Yeoman of Bentworth , Hampshire 13 April 1809 is a PCC one - PROB 11/1496 at The National Archives. There are several other Winter wills listed in the catalogue of the Hampshire Record Office. Georgia Smith in her book ‘Bentworth, the Making of a Hampshire Village’ mentions William Winter having a farm in Ashley Lane in Bentworth ‘now Hop Bine Cottage’. In the Bentworth Enclosure Act of 1799, Joseph Page of Lasham had Croucher’s Farm. Georgia staes that Winter’s Farm was also known as Page’s.

I am in the process of sorting out Georgia’s research on Bentworth and Alton for the Research Area at the Curtis Museum and will, no doubt, come across the Winter family. In fact, the 1665 Hearth Tax shows that William Wynter was assessed for 1 hearth and Widow Wynter for 2! Yours Jane (Hurst)

Thank you soooo much Jane.
I did have the emigration info for James, but not for William. Family lore thinks that these two were cousins, but as yet I have not proved or disproved that.

I was very interested to read about the Winter farm also known as Page's farm. I wonder if this is a connection between the two families back a generation from James and Mary Ann.

Your time and effort is much appreciated.
Cheers, Glen

Dear Glen - you mention the possibility of James and William Winter being cousins:-
William Winter   said to be 35 in 1841
1830   11 May   William Winter married Harriet Hunt at Selborne
1804   29 July      William was son of William and Elizabeth baptised at Selborne

1800   14 Oct      William Winter married Elizabeth Beacher at Selborne
         [Elizabeth buried 11 Dec 1831 aged 55]
[William said to be aged 76 and born in Selborne in the 1851 census]

There were 2 William Winters baptised in 1778 - one in Bentworth and the other in Hartley Mauditt.
It is probably the second who married in Selborne. A William Winter of West Worldham had married Ann Goodyer in Hartley Mauditt on 28 October 1776. He may have been the William who was buried in West Worldham on 12 April 1817 aged 76.
The Bentworth William Winter married Jemima Page on 11 July 1802 in Bentworth. Hence the Selborne Winter family who went to New Zealand were not immediately related to the Bentworth ones. Yours Jane

Yes Jane, I tend to agree with you that the connection to my rellie James and William is not a close one.
I think because they came out on the same boat with the same surname and from the same county, the family assumed they were closely related.

Mind you, to confuse the issue, James' daughter Charlotte, married William's son Henry and are my GG aunt and uncle.  ::)

Thanks for the fresh eyes and info that has verified my data.

Hi Anyone, I see some interesting information about William Winter and his wife Harriett and family who emigrated to Nelson, NZ in 1841.  William and Harriett are my GGG Grandparents.  I work in the UK but I am from NZ and  would like to visit Alton and Selborne on my time off.  If anyone has any information on my line of the Winter family I would very much appreciate it.   My grandfather is Sidney Herbert Claude Winter born 1895, Wanganui, NZ;  his father was Joseph Clement Winter born 1874 in Nelson, NZ, married Mabel Jane Marr;  his father was William Winter born 1844 died 19220, married Mary Jane Armstrong, son of William and Harriett Winter, who was born in Nelson, NZ after they emigrated.

Any information about the family of William and Harriett Winter from Selborne would be appreciated.

Judith Winter
