Tansevel
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 13:43 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a great grandfather (Charles Sealy or Sealey) born in Tansevel, Glamorganshire, Wales. I am very new to this, not familiar with Wales and I cannot find this place. I have tried searching old maps but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any ideas or tips to get me started please?

Thanks

Any idea what year Charles was born?  There are one or two possibilities on the census records for Glamorganshire, but the place name Tansevel doesn't come up.

I beleive he was born about 1873 as he was 88 when he died in 1961. His father was Walter Sealey and mother was Elizabeth (Eliza) Owens or Owner. It is very possible that the name of the town was mispelt on BMD records here as well as his name. I believe (by family stories) that it was originally spelt Sealy.

Charles immigrated to Australia sometime between about 1873 and when he married on 27-Feb-1894. I cannot find them on shipping records. I think that Walter, Eliza (possibly others too?) may have also immigrated - yet to confirm this.

Hi guys,

Just a thought, but could it be Llansawel, which is part of Neath?

Tansevel
Other possibilities include: Taffs Well or Tonyrefail

Do you have the family in 1881 census ?

SS,

No, I haven't looked yet for them, but I just thought of Llansawel as it is about 3 miles away from me!!

I'll go off and have a look now.

Many of the names and places recorded in early BDM in Australia relied on phonetic spellings. When a strong accent is added it can lead to some crazy variations. Is Neath in Glamorganshire?

HI Y2KAY

YES, NEATH IS IN GLAMORGAN.  IF YOU GET A MAP, AND LOOK AT SOUTH WALES, NEATH IS VERY CLOSE TO SWANSEA, AND PORT TALBOT.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi y2kay

You may already have found this elsewhere, but in case you haven't I think this might be a real possibility for your family in the 1871 census - I tried saying Llantrisant with a Somerset accent and I reckon it could easily come out as Tansevel  ;D

Ref: RG10 5380 Folio  Page 10
Address: Cowbridge Road, Llantrisant, Glamorgan

Walter Sealy - Head - Mar - 23 - Railway Waggon (next word difficult to read - looks like upainer) - Born North Petherton, Somerset
Eliza Sealy - Wife - Mar - 23 - Born North Petherton, Somerset
Louisa Sealy - Dau - Unm - 3months - Born Llantrisant, Glamorgan

I can't find a feasible birth for him or a marriage for his parents at the moment - sorry :(

Hope this helps

Angela
