Christening photo - Dating only please COMPLETED
« on: Friday 12 August 11 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hi again,

Could anyone give me an approx year for this.
I think its to commemorate a christening but I'm trying to pin down who it might be.
My wife's Dad thought it might be of his Dad's christening in 1883 but I think it's later. I might have the verso - I'm not sure.
What do you think?

thanks
Paul

Hello Paul  :)

Please can you scan and post the back of the card too? Should provide additional clues!

Kind Regards
Morgan

Paul, I think I agree with you. My gut says this isn’t as early as 1883 either. The woman’s collar, top, sleeves, skirt and hair all look to be on the verge of Edwardian to me. I could be wrong, but none of these details would fit in with the early 1880s. At that time, sleeves were tight from the shoulder to the wrist and dress bodices were just as tight (usually with a corset underneath) and generally matched the skirts. Just the general silhouette of this woman strikes me as being maybe 1890s or early 1900s. I agree with Morgan, a look at the back of this cabinet card might shed some light on the situation.

Edwardian & realistically could be any time during that decade, however I would expect a young woman to be dressed slightly differently to this in the latter part.

Many thanks for your responses.
That helps me narrow it down a lot.

As for the back, well I found it, but it was just a totally blank piece of card.
