Mather/Guthrie/Bulmans
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 17:02 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help.

My Gt gt Grandfather Charles Thomas Bulman born 1859 in Newcastle married Alice Mather in 1882, Gateshead.  They had many children including an Eva Mather Bulman and a Guthrie Bulman.

This points to the wife of Charles Thomas Bulman being Alice Mather and his Mother being Hannah Sarah Guthrie (bapt Alnwick 1834) who married Joseph Bulman in Newcastle 1856.

Now, I have purchased the wedding certificate which states that on the 11th DEC 1856, Joseph Bulman, of full age, bachelor, railway accountant, of this parish, father Thomas Bulman, Land Agent. married hannah Sarah Guthrie, of full age, Spinster, of this parish, father George Guthrie, Grocer.

They were married by licence, which is available on the familysearch site, but really does not give any additional information.

I have tried many searches in ancestry, with very limited results for Thomas/Joseph Bulman (looking in 1841 census etc.), so am struggling finding Joseph Bulmans Mother etc.

It looks as though Joseph Bulman died before the 1861 census (a couple of possibilities in Northumberland and Durham) so married less than 5 years :( as Sarah is a widow in 1861.

Any ideas/assistance would be greatly received.

Neale

He is a Railway Accountant.  Oh and the witnesses are Hannahs Sister Charlotte Georgina Craggs and her husband Thomas Craggs.

Hope you can help. :)

Thomas was a land agent but there is an 1841 entry for a Thomas & Margaret Bulman with a son Joseph aged 8 living in Winlaton Durham

1851 has a Joseph Bulman aged 19 (indexed as Beilman) b Shieldon but occ is engine builder - a bit different to a railway accountant
HO107 Piece 2383 Folio 619 Page 23

I think there are only 2 possible deaths for him.  Son Charles Thomas was born Dec qtr 1859 so Joseph may have died just before his birth in the June qtr 1859 in Durham

Borderline - there is a death in Gateshead in the June qtr 1861.  Gateshead is the registration district where Hannah was living in 1861

So - if he died (say) 31st March 1861 - his death would then have been registered in the June qtr

The 1861 census was taken on the 7th April

You will also find the family, including 'your' Joseph, at Milkwellburn in 1841.
Ho 107 / 302 / Book 6 / Folio  13 / Page 5.

On both the 1841 and 1851 censuse Thomas is entered as a 'farmer' so perhaps the description of his occupation on the marriage certificate was a little fanciful  ;D
