Great Uncle George b. 1898
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 21:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a photo of my Great Uncle George b. 1898. I think he was in the NBL Fusiliers but was wondering if anyone could verify the uniform?  My Mam was told as a child that he had died in the War ( her mother was his sister, born 1906), and I'm only just starting to research.

Thank you for any help, however small, you can give me....

Regards,

Trini.

Hi !
Thanks for the prompt reply! He was George Ridley, born 1898 in Northumberland.  Mother was Mary Alice (Leck) father was Thomas John RIDLEY (b. 1868)

Thanks again.

Trini,

Looking at CWGC, there are two George Ridley's, Machine Gun Corps, but both are from the London area.

There are three Northumberland Fusiliers, but two can be discounted as the parents don't match.

The third unfortunately doesn't have any details:

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=187294

From SDGW, this is George Ridley, born West Wylam, enlisted Newcastle and died of wounds.

It's going to take a bit more, especially given his age and the badge in the photo looks like MGC to me as well, for me to be convinced that this is him.

Hi,

Thank you for your replies.  MGC is a start, as I didn't even know that.  Total newbie to researching military stuff.

Many thanks.  I will keep digging.

Hi Trini, The George Ridley from West Wylam mentioned by Phil, is my great grandfather. My Greorges parents do not match the names you spoke of. Happy to help, steve,
