***COMPLETED***1933 Luton burial look-up please
« on: Monday 15 August 11 16:34 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I would be grateful if anyone can spare the time to look up a burial in Luton for me please.

Details are Alice Day, died June quarter 1933 Luton aged 67.  Trying to work out if this Alice could be my g-grandmother by hopefully finding out who, if anyone, is buried with her.   So if burial for Alice is recorded in either General Cemetery (Rothsay Road) or Church Cemetery (Crawley Green Road) in Luton, it would be brilliant if other names could be checked for same grave ID number.  Apart from Day, other possible names are Mason and Brown.

Many thanks in advance.  Regards, TonyR.

PS A little background if anyone is interested:

My g-grandmother Alice Rhodes married George Day in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs 1885.  When 2 of her sons were killed in WW1, her address was recorded on CWGC as 9 Stockingstone Road, Luton which I believe is nowadays in LU2.

The electoral roll has an Alice Mason living at this address late 1920s – early 1930s with a John Robert Brown, which by co-incidence is the name of Alice Day’s son-in-law!  Recently made contact with descendant of this John Robert Brown on GR & their opinion was that this Alice Mason was indeed Alice Day.  At some time she had ‘lived’ with a chap named Mason on a farm in Warden Hills Luton & taken his name of Mason.  Apparently this Mason chap then left & Alice moved in with son-in-law to look after his children (her grand-kids).  This Brown descendant knows no more on Alice.

Cannot find any Alice Mason deaths in Luton but open to correction.

Hi Susan, thank you for that info, it's very kind of you to spare the time.

As I find with most of my lot, it's never simple.  So no obituary or acknowlegement doesn't help my research and if Alice was not buried in those 2 cemeteries, does that mean a local church graveyard or another town is her resting place?

Oh well, this family tree lark is supposed to be fun ;D but I'll be happier when I find her last abode.

Thanks again.  Regards, TonyR.

From the 1917 Luton Directory at 9 Stockingstone Road (Round Hill) is listed a J M Brown. Unfortnately the directory does not have a names index so i cannot easily check out the other names.

Hi Susan, that's brilliant detective work, I hope you didn't spend too long on it!

Is St Thomas, Stopsley near to Stockingstone Rd & forgive my ignorance what does "No indication as to depth etc" mean?

Many thanks.  Regards, TonyR.

Hardly brilliant detective work. Thought about her death as to where ( having drawn a blank at Rothesay and Crawley Green) Stopsley came to mind.
As I was hoping to look at other stuff today ( doesn't happen too often with commitments etc)thought it worth looking at Stopsley and yes seems bingo.
Took no time at all other than minutes.

No indication as to depth is down to me....sorry.
All the information in the P/R was..........

Burial Date. 10/5/1933,
Name, Alice Day,
Abode, 9 Stockingstone Rd,
Age 67 yrs

Can find the person who performed the  burial if you want.

Hello TonyR,

Have you got the death certificate, as it ought to show her address & name/address (perhaps relationship) of the informant.
