Martin Jansen, to America 1880
« on: Monday 15 August 11 19:31 BST (UK) »

Hi everybody!

My Ggrandad's brother Martin Jansen went to America Aug 20, 1880 from Norway. His destination was Nebraska City with the ship "Hero". (Line: A. Sharpe)

http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=16&filnamn=emikra1&gardpostnr=24640&merk=24640#ovre

Martin was born Nov 21, 1848 in Fet, Akershus. He used also the name Martin Jahnsen Strandbakken.

Is it possible to find out what happened to him in America?

He was aged 32 and single when he went.

I typed Martin Jahnsen Strandbakken into Google and it came up with document which is mostly in Norwegian so I do not know or not if this is helpful!

Hi The Mc!

Thanks for your reply!

I was not aware of this link in my neighbourhood!

You are quite right, my Martin turns up there in a list of Norwegian emigrants!

Let's hope somebody finds him in America....

Hi Jan:

Perhaps I missed it, but I don't see Martin's entry in America.  I tried several searches for immigration records, and don't see him arriving in America in 1880.  :-\

I don't see him on the 1900 census.

Thanks for your effort, Lisa!

Have you tried different spelling? Martin/Marthin - Jahnsen/Jansen?

If no luck, could "Jansen" have "Americanised" to Johnson...?

I did try different spellings, but no one (at least the people I found) immigrated in 1880.   :-\

Hmm..!

Could there be some deviation in year of entry?
(We've noticed that before)

Here's the original migration record for Martin; #47 right hand page:

Provides some more dates...

Hi Jan:

The person I thought was a fairly good match was on an 1880 census (I believe) and it stated he arrived in 1873.

I will have another look tonight after work, unless someone finds him before I return home.

PS  Since I didn't see his arrival, is there a chance he did not sail on that ship, but sailed at a later time?

Did he have an occupation before he left Norway?
