A possibility:

RG10/2508   1871
Bedminster, Somerset

Thomas Barter, 26, married, smith, b Wincanton

(No sign of any wife).

It looks as if he is more Somerset than Dorset.

Richard

Think it all depends on whether Edward was born in Dorset or Wincanton (which has always been in Somerset!).

However, Wincanton Registration District does include 2 parishes that are in Dorset - Buckhorn Weston and Kington Magna.

There is a birth:
September qtr 1847
Wincanton district    vol 10, page 465

Barter, Edward Thomas

1861 census (Reference RG09, Piece 1361, Folio 92, Page 8 ) at Purse Caudle has a Thomas born Wincanton, Somerset, aged 13.

Both Goathill and Purse Caundle come under the Sherborne Registration District, at that time, and later under Sturminster.

Goathill parish was previously in Somerset (until 1895).

So, are we looking for Thomas or Edward Thomas?
