Elands River, Kameelpoort
« on: Wednesday 17 August 11 07:19 BST (UK) »
My query is geographical, regarding the Elands River.  Where is its source?  I believe it flows easterly and becomes a tributary of the Crocodile River in Mpumalanga Province.
At the west of Pretoria it flows near the site of the 1900 Elands River seige (Boer War), then my map seems to show that it flows through Pretoria, before heading NE then east.

Also, I am trying to confirm the location of Kameelpoort Elands River where my great-uncle was reported to have been killed in September 1900.  I have found such a place on one map, east of Rust de Winter, which is NE of Pretoria.  I am wondering if that is the name of a farm, or a small village or just a locality.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this area east of Rust de Winter?  Perhaps there is a farm still known as Kameelpoort?
Cheers,  HBelle

A Google search turned up a 2007 newletter from the Jeep Club of South Africa, where they went on a convoy patrol to Kameelport, a.k.a. KwaMhlanga.

Quoted from the newsletter:
Although a bit further from Pretoria than we usually
plan our fun trips (± 80km) to the farm, it was
worthwhile doing the extra mile! Being able to do an
off-road trip on a remote farm of approximately 1 600
ha, with nothing and nobody (except the Jeep families)
and unspoilt nature all around, really is an adventure.

If you put the name KwaMhlanga into Google Maps (other map sites also work!), you can see Kameelpoortnek-C and Kameelpoortnek-A just north of KwaMhlanga Crossroads.

Thankyou for your reply, KGarrad.
It led to some information about Kamelpoort farm, where my great uncle was killed (and buried?) in 1900, Boer War.  I found an invitation by the Land Claims Committee  to a hand-over celebration of a Batiou land claim that took place place on 6 Dec 2003 at Kameelpoort Farm, Mpumalanga.   The document is quite extensive and gives clear directions to get to the farm from Pretoria and from Nelspruit.  There is also an outline of the ceremony that was to take place.  The name of the prior owner of the farm is not recorded.  I am pleased to be able to know the exact location of the farm.
