Edwin Bond married Sarah Whittington 17th June 1838 in Monmouth. It was her second marriage and she had a daughter Mary Smart by her first marriage  [8yrs] 1841census born in Monmouth. It would appear that Edwin Bond later then had children with Mary Smart ??!! - they never married. Sarah died in 1868, Edwin died in 1878 and Mary Smart died in 1914 in Newport. Any further info on this "interesting family"??!!

slightly confused here. The marriage on FreeBmd and on www.forest-of-dean.net is to Edwin Bond. The transcription gives his father as George dond, hers as Thomas Whittington. Her first marriage in St Briavels is also on the same site.
Edwin is on the 1851 as Bond as well. When does he become Averay?

Terribly sorry Osprey - you are absoloutely right - I had confused all my " Edwins" in my family tree last night and the many postings I put on roots chat - save me right! What a plonker! Bond family it is! thanks for reply as already you have helped me with the place of marriage and the first marriage.
Do you know if I am correct in thinking that Edwin then had children with his "step daughter" mary Smart?

do you have birth certificates or baptisms for any of Mary's children? There are 2 Bond grandchildren shown on the 1861 census, but I don't think you can infer anything about their parentage from the census. It could be enumerator error.

I only have the birth cert of Edwin Bond - which states born 8/2/1842 in Monmouth - father a tailor. mother Sarah Bond late Smart Formerly Whittington.
Sarah and James Smart i understand had Mary Smart. He then died - Sarah married Edwin - had George b1849, Edwin b 1842 , Sarah b 1845. She [ Sarah died] Edwin would appear to have carried on to have children with Mary Smart as children were then called Annie marie BOND Smart b 1852, William Bond Smart b 1855 Fredrick G Bond Smart b 1869 and Trevor A Bond Smart. I was hoping that someone had the certs!! If not I will have to get one myself. Many thanks for help.
