Near Knockmore, Co. Mayo
« on: Thursday 18 August 11 20:49 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate my Grandfather in the 1901 & 1911 Census.

According to my Grandfather's marriage certificatedated January 1915. He was married at the Roman Catholic Church at Knockmore, in Ballina District. His address is shown as 'Ballysliva'.
In December 1915 there first child was born. Registration District was Ballina, and the place of birth is 'Bonnaghsliva'.  Registered by Grandmother from Knockmore.

I cannot find any reference to either 'Ballysliva' or 'Bonnaghsliva' on any map or Census records.

I have previously asked about 'Balysliva' without any luck.  Can anyone let me know were or what is 'Bonnaghsliva' and what was the meaning of 'Sliva' in the early 1900's

what are the rest of the registration district details ?

as well as the county (Mayo) and registration district (Ballina) there should be a superintendent district or similar and the name of the registrar.

I dont see any townland with a name like Bonnaghsliva in the townland database.. but maybe it's a spelling variation

You haven't mentioned any names in this post but here's a link to your previous thread:

My Great Grandfather Anthony Jordan married Selina (Celina)Brogan in Knockmore, Co. Mayo. in 1915.
The marriage certificate states that Anthony's address was given as Ballysliva.  I cannot find this location on any map.  Selina's address was given as Knockmore which I have found on maps.
Can anyone please tell me where is 'Ballysliva' or the nearest location?

Hi Shanew147,
The Photocopy of the entry states:-

Birth Registration in the district of 'Ballina'
Superintendant Registrar's District of 'Ballina'
In the County of 'Co. Mayo'.

These are the same details as on the Marriage Certificate for earlier that year.

The person registering the birth was it's Grandmother who's residence is stated as 'Knockmore'.

The Father profession is a Farmer, so I think that the location must be near Knockmore.

the only location that looks even close in the district is the townland of 'Tullysleva', which is a townland of 284 acres in Kilbelfad civil parish, electoral district of Ballina.

according to the official Irish placename database an alternate name for this townland is Tullynasleevagh

The name seems to be an Anglicised spelling of it's Irish name Tulaigh shleibhe - or literally 'mountain hill'

Closest I could find to 'Bonaghsliva' and 'Balysliva' is Bunaveela in Crossmolina civil parish.

Hi again shanew147,

Thank you for your efforts.

The only 1911 Census entry I can find for Co. Mayo, that has my Grandfather and Great Grandfather's name and the profession of Farmer is in 'Carha' Townland / Street, in Kilgarvin DED. But my Grandfather's age is about 4 years out.

As 'sliva' appears at the end of both locations I have on the certificates, will the meaning of 'sliva' be any help?
