To Lizdb

You mentioned a Hilda Lawrence in 1893.  Where was she, and where did you see her name?

That was another birth in the Tendring Reg District. Not necessarily of any significance, there were lots of Lawrence births other than those I gave you, but it just caught my eye as the name Hilda is not that common.

As I said before, to find Hilda (Dora etc's mum) 's maiden name you will need to purchase a birth cert for one of the girls.
That will ensure a little more certainty as you go back.

On the 1911 census does Hilda describe herself as a widow? What age and birthplace does she give then? And you mention a child Sidney, rahter than Gilbert as per 1901 ....
perhaps if you could give us a full transcriptof the 1911 it would help !

Ok  :)

1911 Census says that Hilda is working as a confectioner (probably runs a sweet shop).  She is called Hilda Lawrence born Doncaster, Yorks - age 49

(Marriage date never found. William and his first wife Jane broke up circa 1890; around 1894 he was  declared bankrupt).  All four children living at home in Kirby - Gilbert 15 born 1896, Reginald 14, born 1897, both born in London  (Never found birth entries),  Dora Mary 13, born 1898 and Caroline 11,born 1900.

Gilbert is a milkman (not Reginald) Sorry.  I mistook the name Gilbert for Sidney, sorry again. :-[

Hilda's marital status is as married.  There is no mention of William at all.  Their living accommodation is Kirby Cross, Kirby le Soken.

If they were not married when Hilda had her sons she would have put her surname as Lawrence I would have thought, and not her single surname.  What do you think? :-\  Jane, Williams first wife died in 1903 in Woodford, Essex.  She was living with her daughter Mary and grandaughter Winifred in 1901. :(

Dora with middle name MARY doesnt help does it? seeing as the choices are Margaret and Marion!

I think the only way forward is to get Carolines birth cert to see Hilda's maiden name.

I have put off sending for the birth certificates because I think she would have used the name Lawrence when registering the childrens births.  I think I will have to bite the bullet now though and order either
Gilberts who may have been born in Edmonton (not London) as on freebmd, him being the first child, or Doras.

Thank you for your help.  I think you can see what a real puzzle this family have been for me for the past 8 years, and still are!!

Tessiewessie.
