TORR, Robert
« on: Friday 19 August 11 13:46 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I am looking for any information on Robrt TORR- Born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England 1784, Christened in St Peter's Cathedral, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England on the 24th July 1785.

Although he was born in sheffield, he was a native of Kirkcudbright, county of Galloway, Scotland.

His parents were Robert (william?) Torr and Hannah Beale. They were married in the Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England on Feb 8 1782.

This is the only information I have on the family and I am desperate to find the origin of this branch of Torr's! Robert Torr (jr.) came out to South Africa in 1806 with the second british occupation of the Cape during the Napoleonic wars.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Leigh Thomas (nee Torr)

Hello

Working on the assumption that your Robert Torr (senior) was in his early twenties when he married Hannah Beale in 1782, I found a bapt entry on the IGI for Robert Torr 24 Feb 1762 at St Peter’s Sheffield, son of William Torr.

There 8 bapt entries for Torr at St Peter’s between 1750 and 1762, though not all to father William.

Does this help?

Yes, thank you. My Robert may have been a Robert William, so this could definitely be a possible match.

Leigh - I've just got started on the road to getting back even further into my history. Complete beginner, me. Have already had some of the work done for me, but I'm interested to know if our trees have any overlap.

My name is James Torr (you can find me on that address by email by the way - jamestorr at gmail) and my tree goes back as far as George J and Mary A Torr. George born 1817 and Mary 1827. George in Yorkshire and Mary (and possibly both lived too) Barrow-on-Humber, Lincolnshire. Would be interesting if there was some link!

James

Hi I am ancestor of this Torr family and still living in Sheffield. Robert was my 1st cousin 6 times removed. His father Robert was the brother of my 6th times Great Grandfather William Torr, born 1717 in Sheffield. His father was Humphrey born in Eyam, Derbyshire in 1693 but moved to Sheffield to be an apprentice cutler.

I can help you connect to the rest of the Torr clan.

Kind regards Dave Torr

Torrs Point and Torrs, Old Map, 1821 (Bottom Section)
There is a place called 'Torrs Point' East side of Kurkcudbright Bay and nearby 'Torrs' North of Drummore Castle, (to the South of the main town of Kirkcudbright, Scotland). Torrs Farm.

Scotlands People
Scotlands People is the official government site, to see the images you can purchase a set of credits, and download b&w images as you wish.

Memorial Inscriptions
S.W. Scotland (Dumfries & Galloway) has a very good set of Memorial Inscriptions, at Dumfries Library. The main set was 12 large Volumes with other Volume sets, at Dumfries Library Archives.

Scottish M.I., often refer to family in other Scottish villages and elsewhere and use the Wife's Maiden names a fair bit too.

General Archive Information
Dumfries and Galloway became a Unitary Authority with an Archive at Dumfries, but some locations had their own Archives, so try the local Libraries too, as well as Dumfries Archives, Scotland.

Added:
Kirkcudbright was the County Town of the area - Kirkcudbrightshire.
