« on: Tuesday 23 August 11 00:07 BST (UK) »
'Shiprem' Montclair Avenue, North Brighton, Victoria - does anyone know if this home still exists? Gabriel (Gilbert) Douglas (Watchmaker & Jeweller) and family possibly lived here around 1915 to 1925
It has been altered to Skyrim

In 1914 and 1915 Montclair Avenue North Brighton did not exist so you are seeking info after 1915.

It was fashionable to name your home, no matter how humble or grand in this era.

There is no Gabriel DOUGLAS on the Victorian Electoral Rolls so perhaps this is your man but they didn't live in Montclaire Avenue, North Brighton.

Australian Electoral Roll
1903
DOUGLAS Bessie  139 Park Street, Parkville  HD
DOUGLAS Gilbert 139 Park Street, Parkville Jeweller

1909
DOUGLAS Bessie 26 Armstong Street, Middle Park  HD
DOUGLAS Gilbert  26 Armstrong Street, Middle Park  Jeweller

1914
DOUGLAS Bessie Clarence Street, Elsternwick  HD
DOUGLAS Gilbert Clarence Street, Elsternwick  Jeweller

1919
DOUGLAS Bessie  Kooyong Road, Elsternwick  HD
DOUGLAS Gilbert  Kooyong Road, Elsternwick  Jeweller

1924
DOUGLAS Bessie "Allambee" Marriage Road, Brighton  HD
DOUGLAS Gilbert "Allambee" Marriage Road, Brighton  Jeweller

1931
DOUGLAS Bessie "Allambee, Marriage Road, Brighton  HD
DOUGLAS Eric 6 Marriage Road, Brighton  Fitter
DOUGLAS Gilbert 6 Marriage Road, Brighton  Mechanic

Bessie divorced Gilbert in 1931 on grounds of misconduct

Son Eric went to the South Pole with Sir Douglas MAWSON ;D

Ah I see many of these newspaper snippets have been tagged....perhaps by you ;D  I recall a previous request about your DOUGLAS watchmakers :)

Perhaps if you could give us the source of your info we may be able to assist further.

I will add a couple of snips to show no street of that named existed in Melbourne and suburbs in 1914/1915

Cheers :)

Many thanks - yes it was all the one family.  Gabriel the Watchmaker was also called Gilbert (as his father was Gabriel a Watchmaker too)
That is Gilbert jnr (Watchmaker) at Parkville, Middle Park, Elsternwick (they had a general store in Kooyong Road run by Bessie/Elizabeth) and Brighton - Gilbert the mechanic is a son of this Gilbert

So are we looking for a Gilbert Eric DOUGLAS with mother Bessie?

WW2 service record summary...
http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/veteran.asp?ServiceID=R&VeteranID=1045939

Death
DOUGLAS Gilbert Eric
Father Gabriel  Mother Bettie  THOMPSON
At Heidelberg  67 years  1970  Reg#19403

Marriage
DOUGLAS Gilbert Eric
SEVIOR Ella
1934 Reg#825

Gilbert Eric and Ella were cremated and are memoralised at
http://www.deceasedsearch.com/index.php

Australian Electoral Roll
1949
DOUGLAS Ella  43 Airlie Street, South Yarra  HD
DOUGLAS Gilbert Eric  43 Airlie Street, South Yarra  No occupation

1949, 1954
DOUGLAS Ella  44 Ebden Street, North Brighton  HD
DOUGLAS Gilbert Eric 44 Ebden Street, North Brighton Aircraft Engineer

Perhaps they moved to Montclaire Avenue post 1954 - limit of available online electoral rolls.

Really can't help any further as we need a street number to identify the property in Montclaire Avenue, North Brighton. It is quite obvious that none of the family lived at this address pre 1954.

Gilbert Eric's death certificate may should not his usual residential address.  I would suggest with his death occurring at Heidelberg it may have been at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital which was established to care for veterans and war widows.

You can purchase an image of certificates online for $AUD17.50
