birth Date

Hello,

How do i find out the birth date for my Benjamin Carter, the only info i have is from the Census records which could be out either. I have the year 1849 born in Stanks and i know his father was John Carter as i have Bens wedding certificate. one of the witnesses was Elizabeth Carter(Leaf), i think this was Bens mum, but i want to know for certain so the only way  i can do this is by getting the birth certificate but you need to know correct year and parents. How can i narrow this down to make sure i apply for the right certificate ?

Where is Stanks?  If you look on FreeBMD you'll find 16 Benjamin Carters born between 1848 and 1850.  You could narrow this down to his place of birth and then order the certificate.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hello, Thank you for the reply, Stanks part of the Barwick in Elmete Parish i believe in Yorkshire. Neighbouring areas are Seacroft, Whinmoor, though Seacroft came under the parish of Whitkirk back then.
I will go have a look at free bmd

Cheers
Jo

Hi Jo,
You don't have to know his parents in order to get the birth certificate.  You just have to know whereabouts he was born (or take a guess at it) and then find a birth in the right area at around the right time.

Cheers

If you click on the registration district name on FreeBMD, it will tell you the areas that are included in it.  Between 1837 and 1865, Tadcaster registration district included the parish of Barwick in Elmet :)

Thank you for that PrueM, so do you think my Benjamins birth is more likely to be the Tadcaster one rather than either of the 2 Leeds ones.
Do you think if i rang for the birth certificate and said Benjamin Carter brn around 1849 in Stanks that would be enough ?

Hi Jo

Barwick in Elmet is in the Tadcaster Registration District. The link below has details of the coverage of the Tadcaster Registration District

Jo, if you ring the Tadcaster register office to see if they have the certificate, you would give them Benjamin's name and the year and quarter that the birth was registered.

If you order the certificate from the GRO, you would need to use their online form (I think - not sure they take phone orders ) and would need to put in the other references from FreeBMD - the volume and page number.
