Stepney/Mile End area schools in 1870s
« on: Wednesday 24 August 11 09:04 BST (UK) »
My great-grandfather was born in 1867 and grew up in Louvain Steet, Cologne Street (both no longer there but very close to what is now Shandy Park) and Burdett Road (which is still there) in Stepney/Mile End, London. Apparently, he was a grammar school boy - we just don't know which school. As we know so little about him at present, it would be wonderful to find out which school he attended and - fingers crossed - to see any records of him there which might still exist. I don't know the area, or the educational history of the area very well, though. Is anybody here able to suggest any possible schools of the time which could be candidates?
Thank you so much in advance to anyone who might be able to help.
With best wishes.

Earlier this year I transcribed a lot of London school records for ancestry.co.uk and they werre nearly all from that area.  If you can post your great-grandfather's name I can have search for him.

Henwood - Devon/Cornwall, Woolwich Kent
Tilliduff/Tullideph - Aberdeenshire, East London, Plumstead Kent

Thank you very much indeed, Chris. His name was James John Sharp, born 1867.

I'm afraid his name doesn't come up in a search - but the schools are not yety listed on Ancestry - they appear to be very slow :(

From this link  http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/18iii.htm it would appear that there was only one true grammar school in London, at Hackney.  He would certainly have had to travel.  It is possible that he would have taken up his scolarship elsewhere.

My grandfather, born in 1894, got a scholarship and had to travel from Plumstead to New Cross, to Haberdasher Aske's School.  Quite daunting in those days I would imagine.

Let's hope that those London School records are processed quickly.  Sorry I raised false hopes.

No worries at all - thanks very much for looking. I guess it will be a case of researching all possibilities individually and hoping he turns up somewhere.

I'm not very clued up on the process of getting to grammar schools in those days. You mention a scholarship - do you know where and how he might have obtained this? Would he have attended and had to have sat an exam at a primary school of some kind in order to get the scholarship?

Thanks very much again

Hi

The history of Grammar schools

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammar_school

I'm not sure whether Ancestry's records from the London Metropolitan archives will include anything but National board schools (primary)?

Thank you Valda. Do you know if it is possible to search those records? The link goes through to a page that seems to be a work in progress.

Thank you!

Valda, I did transcribe some secondary schools - they were very interesting because they sometimes recorded what the pupils went on to do - teacher training etc.  There certainly weren't as many secondary schools as primary though, but I suppose you'd expect that at that period.
