Richard Tranter c. 1787 at Stokenchurch
« on: Wednesday 16 April 08 11:24 BST (UK) »
Another Stokenchurch puzzle.....

Who were the parents of Richard Tranter c. 1787 at Stokenchurch?

According to my PR CD, he was the son of Richard and Elizabeth, but they only m. in 1789, so it is more likely that he was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth?
 ???
It gets complicated, because R & E had another son, Richard c. in 1792, which should then mean that the previous Richard had died?

My problem is, that I have Richard m. Sarah Sears in 1808, but by 1821, a Richard and Prudence are producing offspring at Stokenchurch?

In 1841, Richard and Sarah are alive and well and living at Lewknor, while Richard and Prudence are at Stokenchurch......

So it seems both Richards survived?

In 1851, the Richard at Lewknor Uphill is widowed and has 3 very young children and a visitor, Jane Bird.
 ::)
I have no c. recs at Stokenchurch for these 3 youngsters, maybe at Lewknor?
In 1861, they are all at Stokenchurch and Richard is married to a Jane??

I don't know what happened to Prudence and the other Richard.....

So, back to my original question..... was one of the Richards the son of Thomas and Elizabeth?

From Oxford FHS CD transcript Lewknor baptisms
May 27 1849 Bird Moses s Jane Stutteridge reputed father Richard  Tranter
Jan 26 1851 Tranter Aaron s Richard and Jane woodman Stutteridge

Doesn't answer your actual question though!

Thank you for checking the Lewknor records.
I found a possible marriage record for Jane Bird and Richard Tranter in 1851 (on free BMD). so that might explain why Moses is c. Bird, while Aaron is a Tranter....

Hello patannk.

Richard TRANTER is my gt-gt-gt-gt-gt grandfather. His son Thomas, born to him and Sarah Sears, married in 1833 at Lewknor to Lucy Green. His daughter Caroline is my gt-gt-gt grandmother.

Richard and Jane Bird had these children: David 1848, Moses 1849, Aaron 1851, Jonathan 1852 and Eve 1856. Eve and Jonathan are not baptised at Lewknor or Stokenchurch. David 1848 was baptised at Lewknor on 7 May 1848, son of Jane Bird, single woman of Studderidge.

Sarah Sears (Tranter) died on 21 Feb 1847 at Studderidge, Lewknor-Uphill, aged 65/67 years. Buried at Stokenchurch with Monumental Inscription:
In Memory of SARAH, Wife of Richard Tranter, who died Feby 21st, 1847, aged 67 years. 'A Virtuous Wife, A Parent Dear, A Faithful Friend lies sleeping here. Prepare to meet thy God.'

Now - I would say that the Richard 1787 who married Sarah Sears in 1808 was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth. I have already seen one mistake on the CD - a baptism in 1849 stating 'son of Richard and Lucy' - this should be Thomas and Lucy. So it is entirely possible that there is a mistake on the CD. The only thing about Richard and Sarah is - they marry in 1808, but don't have their first child until 1814, unless there are more I haven't found.

I can't find the marriage of Richard to Prudence.

That fits - they baptised their first child at Stokenchurch on 28 Jan 1821.
