ELLIS Look Up Please
« on: Wednesday 24 August 11 13:40 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to trace the parents etc of:

Elizabeth Ellis Born:  21 January 1827 St Buryan, Cornwall, England
Died:  Elizabeth Hoskin 1884 Benalla VIC, Australia. (Married John HOskin 1851 Melbourne Australia).

Her death cert lists parents as:  Father:  Ellis Jas  Mother:  Elzth Donald

I have searched Cornwall BDM, and Census records etc and cannot seem to make a connection anywhere.  ???

Thankyou
 ;)

How sure are you about the surname of Elizabeth's mother? There's a possible marriage to an Elisabeth Daniel in the right area.

Thankyou for your time.

Perhaps I need to consider that I have taken a wrong track.

I have attached the birth certificate of James Hoskin - son of John HOskin (Cornwall) and Elizabeth Ellis (Cornwall).
Perhaps someone could help with deciphering the text as to where they were born?

I think that John Hoskin is listed as Penzance.  As for Elizabeth - I cannot read.  It starts with an M perhaps?

The only listing I could find for Emigration was:
 Year 1848
Forename Elizabeth
Surname ELLIS
Parish Or Reg District Sunning?/Dunning?, Cornwall
Destination Australia, NSW
Age 21
Occupation Housemaid
Notes New South Wales, State Archives, Passenger List

Hi  rachuna,

I have seen the names DANIEL and DONALD confused in the past. I too feel this is the correct family. Names on death certificates are only as good as the informant.

I think the places of birth listed on the birth certificate are both Penzance. (Not far from St Just, Sennen and St Buryan) St Dennis is quite some distance from this area. Looks like most of the children were baptised in St Buryan. Perhaps James and Elizabeth were in the St Dennis area for a short time. Elizabeth grew up in St Buryan and St Just so probably thought she was born in the area. (In fact she may heve been but baptised in St Dennis.)

The parents married in Sennen where they were both listed as being from in the census. Eldest Child James born in Sennen.

As to the immigration document. I am still racking my brain to try to think what she may have told them re her birth.

OK, thankyou everyone, much appreciated!

I feel that it makes sense to assume Elizabeth Ellis's mother is Elisabeth Daniel.

Thankyou, I have something to work with now!
