Finding Birth Cert/Father - Royal Marine
« on: Tuesday 14 November 06 14:11 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help?
My family has a history of being in Royal Marines. I am trying to find out where my great great grandfather was born, so I can continue down the line. There is a belief that we originate from Cork, Ireland, but nothing concrete yet.
The name is William Quianlan or Quinlan (seems to change to Quinlan after 1900) he was born 4/8/1862, but can't locate on any records.... he was a Lieutenant and Captain in Royal Marines, married Louisa Elizabeth Lawrence in 1891, and on marriage cert, father is listed as Thomas Quinlan deceased.
I'm not sure where I can go to locate further info that will help. The only record I was able to downlaod from the National Archives only lists DOB not where or Father's name.
His service included Malta REgiment and he was discharged to RND Camp , Blandford in 1915-1916.Was still alive to attend son's wedding in 1919 and listed as a Captain in RM then on wedding cert.

Can anyone help or does anyone know where I can find out more details, I believe his father Thomas may also have been a Royal Marine?? But he may also be the link to Ireland, so I guess I won't be able to get any birth details for Thomas....

Confused?! Can you help?!

Thanks!

Catone, thank you for that, yes I did see that, but I can't find any records for a birth at all at Alverstoke, or anywhere infact!

I think Alverstoke is another  military address? So its really if anyone has ideas about where I can get birth info??!He's not on GRO index.... desperately hoping to get a birth cert for him!

Thanks!

Trouble is the only births I could find in that area that are similar to Quianlan are these -

John Patrick Quinlan June 1867 Alverstoke Vol 2b Page 480

Davaid William Quinlivan March 1869 Alverstoke Vol 2b Page 523

Cant find them in 1871, so could they have just been in the area while father was stationed there?? Could he be "Davaid William", lied about age to get into army?? More questions, no answers I'm afraid  :-\

Thank you for that help! That is indeed a possibility, I hadn't actually considered and was very common.
Might be worth me havinga look at the birth certs and see if Thomas is the father.....

Your right more questions!! Still  it would be no fun if it was easy!

Thanks again Cat! I really appreciate your quick response. :)

Good Luck

Welcome to Rootschat. Unfortunately Sallie hasn't been online since 2006 but I've merged your post with her thread.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
